Firewalls

Just installed McAfee's Firewall program (came with virusscan 7)... and I think I might be having trouble hosting games. I can't tell if I am able to recieve players, or that they just don't even try cause of a possible slow down in connection. Has anyone had any trouble with firewalls and McAfee? Is there any way in TT to check your server's average connection speed to the TT network? I'm not a computer wizard, I know just enough to get me in trouble.

Or:
Find out what port the game runs on, and open that port on the firewall (accept incoming connection) ;)

Yes, disable the firewall every time you play a game and completely defeat the purpose of having one :)Or:

Thanks for the help anyway.

McAfee's Firewall 4 does not allow you to open specific ports... talked to tech support today but they were no help. Allowed TT full access to connections, but to no avail. Tech support suggested I go back to Personal Firewall, which runs $30-40 per year. Hosting TT games does work with Personal Firewall (had it until a few days ago, then my PF trial period expired). Just hate to cough up more dough for McAfee. Thanks for the help anyway.

You might try Sygate personal firewall or Tiny personal firewall, both free last I checked.

Sygate is a great firewall. Was free, very user friendly and I've never had a problem. Last time I used Zone Alarm (about 2 years ago), had a helluva time uninstalling it. It left behind residule .dlls (which ended up locking down all outbound). Had to track them down and manually delete them via DOS. :o\ Never went back to it.

Several of the comments on zdnet about the newer free version of Zone Alarm mentioned the problems with the old Zone Alarm, and note that the newer version is vastly superior. I'm satisfied with it so far; but I have only had experience with McAfee's Personal Firewall (good) and Firewall/Guardian 4 (bad, annoying).

When I looked into Sysgate, it was not free. Okay, sorry. I guess Sygate Tech discontinued their free version. It was a free download about a year ago. @Home had the link for it on their customer support site.

Might have been a deal with @Home. TMK, Sygate PF was never free to the general public. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Or, you can get Norton Internet Security, and it will automaticly detect which port the games/programs run on, and ask yes or no to wether it can access the net :)
