Material Editor Problems

Hi,
I am new to these forums. I have a little experience in coding from using Game Maker 8. Anyway, I am having a lot of trouble with the material editor.
1. When I try to swap materials, Torque crashes. I have no idea how to change or set materials to objects.
2. I am running a 2007 Acer computer with Windows Vista 32-Bit.
3. Is there a script editor in Torque 3D? I hope so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS. I would love it if someone can help me out a little in making a super smash bros. game.
