Question About Products

by CDMS · in General Discussion · 07/24/2010 (7:16 pm) · 7 replies

I have a quick question about which product I should buy. I want to create xBox 360 Indie games, which I know I need to buy the Torque X software, but in addition to that software, would I need to buy the Torque 3D software as well to build my game, or would everything that the Torque 3D software have be on the Torque X software?

I've been reading up as much as I can find on both softwares but nothing so far that I've come across has told me too too much about this. Hopefully someone can help me before I buy the wrong software.

Thanks,
CDMS

Torque X and Torque 3D are differing and separate products - you would not need one for the other.

EDIT: I would suggest trying out the Demo for each (found on the Product page(s)) so that you would have a feel for the usage and advantages of each.

Thank you, but if I made something in Torque 3D, would I be able to export that into the Torque X so I can put it into xBox 360 format?

I believe you would be able to use some assets (might need some format coversions) from one to the other, but any code you're written would have to be redone. TorqueX is grounds up C# code, whereas Torque 3D is C++ with a Torque specific scripting language layered onto it.

TorqueX + XNA seems to be a favored route to getting things to the XBox, although I believe there is an additional Console License for Torque that would allow one to port a Torque 3D game to the XBox.

Ok, I'm only looking at the demo for Torque X right now and it popped up as three options, "Create", "Import", and "Open". When I click "Create", it pops up with a browser window. So, with that engine, I would need to have something previously created to add onto there, correct?

For the Builder? "Create" allows you to use a starter template or existing demo game to begin your project with. You'd have to browse the TorqueX directory to find the starter kit/demo/template.

So where would I find the TorqueX directory? I'm sorry, I'm just pretty new to all of this.
