Torque3d Terrain Detail Textures

I am using T3D1.0.1 I have what I believe to be some pretty good textures for using on my terrain. I put the texture into the diffuse selection of the terrain material selection. I have a normal map for the texture as well. But one thing I dont have is a detail texture. How are detail textures for the terrain Materials created and what is the best way to use them.
I tried using the same texture in the detail as I do in the diffuse, but I notice the sand texture that comes with the empty room has what seems to be a grey scale texture listed as its detail.
So what is the best way to do detail textures for terrain or anyother textured object?
Thanks in advance for any advice offered

It works very much like an "overlay" filter (gimp/photoshop).
So whilst the colour in a detail map blends/increases in the diffuse map, using greyscale, whiter than 128RGB makes the diffuse lighter, and darker than 128RGB makes it darker. 128RGB directly gives no change in light/dark is totally transparent.

Detail maps amplify the colour and brightness of the diffuse map, and also gives additional detail (hence the name I guess!).It works very much like an "overlay" filter (gimp/photoshop).

Why would anyone like to use separate layer to amplify colors while he can use diffuse map with correct colors?

I Think the OP was more interested in how to create a detail map, anyhow. There was a good post about how to do so in photoshop, but I can't find it at the moment.

I believe it is the "gives additional detail" aspect that is more important here. Diffuse = color, Detail = pattern, Normal = fake shadows...I think that is correct, but I would certainly welcome a more expert explanation. Thanks for that info, but the question remains for me. How do I make a detail texture for use in Torque3D?
I figured it was to enhance detail, but I have no idea what steps need to be done to get it to that point

@Steve D.
If you can find that post I would greatly appreciate it. I did searches of the forums and came up with zilch.

If you'll forgive the spam pic as an example - the colour of the terrain is just blank coloured diffuse (green and brown), and the grass/earth details are the detail maps done in greyscale. I avoided the most extremes of white and black, as they're too harsh. As I remember I tiled a photo for the textures.

I saw either Russell or Tom (from Sickhead) talking about detail textures one time... but that was months ago and I didn't really pay attention to the discussion.

Maybe not the proper way to create a detail texture, but if you have a pattern you like just desaturate (I use theGimp - surely PS has the equivalent) the image and use it for the detail texture. Experimentation, and a little tweaking/touchup, usually gives good results.I saw either Russell or Tom (from Sickhead) talking about detail textures one time... but that was months ago and I didn't really pay attention to the discussion.

I am using the desaturation method, will post some results later as I fine tune things

Thanks Everyone,I am using the desaturation method, will post some results later as I fine tune things

this is the old image with the diffuse texture in the detail slot
and this is the new image with the diffuse texture destaturated and contrast adjusted
i still have more tweaking to do, but its getting where I want it

I am also interested to know how to create this?
Thanks for putting this Donald :-)
