Didn't know where I should put this. Discreet(3D studio max) plans on putting out a product free to gameplayers to help in Mod making. Go to the link for the details.

This isn't quite the deal it sounds like at first. Though gMax is free to users, it worthless on it's own. You can't read or write anything but it's own "proprietary" format.

To make use of gMax, you'll need to download a game specific gMax "pack", which will basically extend gMax with game specific functions and game specific read/write functions. Discreet will charge developers on a per title basis for the right to distribute these game "packs". I have no idea how much they want for it, but I pretty sure it's not going to fit in my budget any time soon.

What will probably happen is that some company will license and distribute a game pack and it's game specific file format will be public. So then we can use this game pack to develop for other games :) I'm sure Discreet will do all they can to prevent this scenario :)
(Either that, or someone will crack the gMax format)

Not having access to the SDK will limit the usefullness of this tool for low budget developers.

Funnily enough, I went through the gmax info myself, basically you CANNOT make your file format public. So people could use your tools to export, but couldnt write thier own..

its basically a plugin for 3dsmax. In fact, it IS a plugin for 3dsmax..

I dont understand how discreet can have "open source" on thier site, and yet do something like this.

Ah well..

Maybe they're gearing up for April Fools...

Does anyone have an idea how much these add-on wotsits will cost? And what happens if your file format somehow becomes public without your knowledge?

Looks like they're only talking about the Quake III game pack being open source. And can someone quote the part that says you can't distribute the packs, I missed it :(

Far as I can tell this will still be cheaper than 3dsmax itself...

We talked to the Discreet guys at CGDC about supporting the GG community with GMax. It isn't going to happen at this time. Crank up the Milkshape exporters!!

As far as we could tell, GMax is not much cheaper than using 3DS unless you have a HUGE project. It starts to be attractive at around $95,000 of investment in 3DS!

Break out the open source:)

Well, if someone can document the formats used, I can write a maya exporter for it. I guess we already have 3ds exporters for the models, so it would only take an exporter for the architecture formats.

I wouldnt really worry about gMax, its basically just 3DS, so its going to be freely available everywhere anyway. Someone just needs to reverse engineer a format that does what we need.
