3DS Max 4.2 crash

by Sam Contapay · in General Game Discussion · 07/23/2003 (10:14 pm) · 11 replies

OK I had a problem exporting out using Milkshape so I figure.. eh must be me. So I IM a friend who has 3DS Max 4.2 and asked if he could export this file for me. I give him the appropriate DLE and I sent him a .3DS file. He brought it in tried to export, got an error. He then saved the file to .MAX from .3DS and tried export again and got "error". He wasn't too descriptive but anyone out there has MAX 4.2 and wants to try this file please let me know and I will email it to you. This is a file I pulled down from 3d cafe just to test out some features in RE.

Question is there more docs then Appendix A about how to export out to G3D? Thanks.

Are you sure it has the "bounds" node?

The file he sent me was missing the "Bounds" node.

I didn't even know about the bounds box I just sent the file and the .dle to a friend with 3DS Max because being a hobbyist developer I can't afford 3DS Max :) I will have them place the bounds node, so its just a square over the model?

Ironically, unless you're doing some fancy animation techniques the bounds node just has to exist. It's location is the "center" of the part. It's size is irrelevant in most cases.

Ugh so I just tell him to put a bounds box in the middle, or node? Will someone proficient in 3DS Max know what I am talking about? Is this information in Appendix A? =)

The funniest part, is the bounds node has no geometry in the .g3d file, but requires geometry in the model itself. It seems it exists *only* for the MAX exporter, I have no idea why it is even exported, but RE wont load the .g3d file if it's not there and in the right place in the file structure.

This is incredibly simple to do in max. Just create a box an label it "bounds".

Position the box at the center of the shape.

Ah OK thanks again. I just wanted to know what to tell him, and I am at my "day job" ;) so don't have access to the help file.

Yeah it kept crashing on me when exporting and the dump file was 0 so I couldn't look for anything.

Form what I can tells, the RE use the model's bounds node for center reference and orientation.
