READ THIS FIRST:
I did not know about the CVS changelist when I posted this message. And that is exactly what I wanted. Here is the link to the change list, which shows exactly what the GG guys have been working hard at for the past few weeks. :)

www.garagegames.com/docs/torque.sdk/changelist/index.php?list=HEAD

It is now over 5 weeks later. And we have not heard anything official from anyone at GG. This is nothing new; it is merely a continuation of the pattern that has persisted for a very long time, and has recently been growing worse.

I'm not normally one to complain, but I would really appreciate some more feedback/information from the GG guys. The last post by Tim Gift, almost a quarter of a year ago, said that he was working on torque 1.2 What features will this include? Do they need/want any help with specific issues? What are the plans after that? When can we expect some more information on Torque 2?

Perhaps I'm missing something. But it seems to me as if the GG guys are leaving us in the dark. If they aren't working on the engine right now, and are instead talking with developers about publishing deals or helping some of the first games be successful, that's cool, but I'd like to know. Right now it feels like they sit around all day waiting for stuff to happen, and I KNOW that isnt the case.

I mean no offense to any of the GG guys, and I'm sure you have your reasons, but perhaps you could share them with us? :)

What does everyone else think?

The GarageGames guys will be doing a monthly update article for the forthcoming GameMechanic (GG Dev Newsletter). This article is focused entirely about them and what has gone on in the past month that they can tell us about.

I am not sure if that satiates the need for information about the daily happenings at their offices while they work, but it should do.

"Curiouser and curiouser," cried Alice.

My suggestion would be to just work on your game with the current version of Torque and save T2 for your game sequel. :-)

@L Foster: Whoa. Newsletter? When was this announced?

Was it announced in a forum thread just now? ;)

Seriously, yes, that would satiate the need for information. Thank you.

@Eric Forhan: None of us can make that determination without more information, like a release date, even a general one that gives an estimate + or - a year.

Josh, I would be surprised to find out that they would have a T 2.0 in any time less than one year--given the size of the core team and other projects they have also been involved with. If it were soon, I'd suspect at the least some info leaking out--or as much as an official announcement. I fully admit I don't know for sure. :-)

But, who knows... they may have more interns than the Mayo clinic on a sunny day, and can make short work of a new engine.

Oh, I just wanted a rough estimate. It might be one year, it might be three, and either way is fine with me, I just would like to know. :)

I dont expect it to be done in under a year, and I dont even believe my project will be done that soon. That's why it would be nice to know more: so I can see if T2 is a real possibility for this game, or if it will be released too late.

Hmm...this does bring up some interesting points...

I've been resisting the indoor-plumbing pull for a while but out-houses are becoming more and more obselete. So, I'm thinking about joining the hordes, but I have two problems with indoor plumbing: paying the water bill and the periodic cleaning, which annoy me to no end. Maybe I've just seen crappy looking toilet bowls, but this leads me to my question: should I go ahead and purchase a toilet and indoor plumbing regardless of my qualms or wait for a machine which sucks the shit straight out of my ass? My hope is that such a machine would lead to a more convenient defecating experience, but, then again, I could be waiting in vain. Plus, I don't want to embrace modern technology only to have it be replaced within a couple of years.

Hm, not *that* funny...
But back to the original topic... I totally understand Josh's point, which was simply: "Could we get a little more 'behind the scenes' information on a regular basis?"
I too feel a little "uninformed" lately, there seems to be a lot of stuff goin on but nobody posts anything relevant "officially" for weeks or even months... sure, nobody "owes" anybody information, but it sure would be nice nevertheless :)
that's the *only* point (at least for me), no "give us Torque2!" ... or "should I buy Torque if there will be Torque 2 sometime in the future" or anything ... I'm quite happy with Torque and I just want some more "participation" ;)

Haha, what a wiseass. ;)

Though again, you miss the point. As I said before, I dont care about personal details; I dont want a blog of everyday activities.

I just want to know what work is being done regarding Torque and game publishing.

@Beffy: Exactly. The only reason I mention T2 is that I assume (though I have no way of knowing) that much of there recent and future work has to do with T2 (Since there would be little point in continually improving Torque if they were planning on making a 'sequel') But, I have no way of knowing this for certain without more information. :)

I'd like to hear a bit more about what is going on as well, simply because it adds to the 'community atmosphere', but as others have mentioned, when it comes to Torque 2, you shouldn't even think about it yet. You've got to work on what is available now and not worry about Torque 2. Following that path results in a Daikatana or Duke Nukem Whenever (er, Forever) treadmill.

Man, conspiricy theory 101. We update news items, post in the forums all the time, and because we don't update our "personal" .plans, we are not communicating? This is absurd.

Some day, there will be an updated, next generation Torque. We are in the technology business. You know what? There will someday be a Pentium 4.0 GHz too. Does that stop you from buying the current version? We have said Torque 2 will have a reasonable indie priced upgrade and the technology upgrade path will be very reasonable. That is all we are going to say for now.

The reason there is no official word on Torque 2 is because it is not official yet. How can we communicate what we do not know? You know we are working on a Torque Demo and documentation, and it will be avery good thing.

Oooh, Jeff, you posted this like a few minutes ago.. I feel so neglected! :)

I do get Josh's point, but having said that, I'm kinda happy with the way we are now, so maybe I'm just generally having a happy time anyway :)

I do think the newsletter thingy will basically do what Josh wants though (and maybe a leetle more).

Phil.

*sigh*

@Phil: Yes.

@Jeff Tunnel and everyone who keeps talking about T2:
I bought torque, or V12, the second it came out. I would buy it now. But that's not the issue. In fact, the issue has nothing to do with T2 really, it was just used as an example.

I dont think it is a conspiracy or anything crazy. And we really DO appreciate you guys posting on the forums and news items, that's very cool. But I guess I just want to know a little more about what's happening with torque.

The newsletter should fit the bill nicely.

Thanks for the post, and now we all know a little bit more. See, this is all I wanted. :) It isnt so hard... :)

If you want to prove to yourselves that the GG guys are real and not just holograms, follow the CVS change list and see who submits what and when. This talk of T2 is just ridiculous; get on with Torque 1 and stop worrying about Christmas in February.

CVS changelist? How do I access this? The changelog.txt has not been updated for over a year. I assume you are talkiong about something else, but I dont know how to use it. :(

Perhaps that would answer some of my questions. :)

Wow, that is exactly what I wanted. I guess I should have seen that earlier, but I the ONLY link to it is in the right hand sidebar on the pages for documentation, etc for the engine. I never looked over there. :)

So, in conclusion, I apologize. There already is exactly what I wanted, hell, there's alot more than I expected. It just happens to be hidden away in a link on the right. :)
