Multi-Team BattleMode/Scrum/Capture the Flag?
by FoulPlay · in ThinkTanks · 07/18/2003 (3:45 pm) · 32 replies
Just thinking 3 or 4 team battlemode or scrum would be cool. STILL WANTING CAPTURE THE FLAG PLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEASE just add a another goal a blue one and another flag!!! maybe 2 forts or castles???? and a bigger map! your ideas welcome
THE ONE THE ONLY
FoulPlay 8======)
2 strucures on a capture the flag server on bigger maps would take this game to a new level And increase sales dramatically.
Something more for me 2 dominate ;)
-Any map design ideas??
-developers CAPTURE THE FLAG!!!!
P. S. bigger map would also allow more tanks without overcrowding

Actually; dropping, yeah - dropping the ball is rather Rugby-esque, in which a forward pass is illegal.

@az, yes you need to play "kill the rats" it is a blast and most of the time the DEMO (rats) have fun too.
KOTH can be played (with mature players) on the center hill of Cranium Crater.
Rules:
No shooting, just ramming off.
Whoever maintains control longest wins (no way to judge.. maybe have a ref. player)
I would like to see two game styles:
1. Football/Rugby style map containing a static goal at each end and a scrum spawn in the middle region of the map (not same spot but across a line in the middle)
This map would allow teams to vary tank types for different roles and allow for "possitions" like chasers, goalees, blockers, etc.
New tactical strategies would emerge also.. would love to see an "American football reverse play" or a power drive up the middle pulled off behind a line of blocking tanks.
2. Team battle mode map with controllable areas. Such as the capture the flag game FoulPlay suggested. Each team tries to get the scrum back to "base" and gains points for the lenght of time it is within their "goal".
In a parting note.. some building types would definately be neat.. a large spacious castle with wide ramps and battlements.. maybe a corner tower ramp... sweet.

I never even considered no weapon KOTH. You guys tired it and it was fun? We tried it with weapons and it was not much fun at all.
Try to set it up and play by the 'rules' and let us know the results. For us, it is a balancing act. It takes a bit of work to create, deploy, and test a game type. Any upfront help with some of these 'informal' tests will go a long way. Post what worked and what did not work, what was fun and what was lame, so we have a mental picture of what we are dealing with.
I did drop in on the server where they were jumping to the islands on night. It was very social and fun. A 'stunt park' map might be a nice little addition (distraction)

If you guys could mock up some games like you are suggesting, get a few people together, play, take notes, it would help a lot.I never even considered no weapon KOTH. You guys tired it and it was fun? We tried it with weapons and it was not much fun at all.

Albeit the "area" was defined by trash talking.. such as "stay off our hill vile demo rat filth".. this seemed to spur the type of coordination we desired in our advesary and made them charge in sufficient numbers... sometimes followed by
"We have your stupid hill and are touching your stupid trees"
But rest assured we were racing back to retake our hill.
These simple games showed how much fun coordination amoung teams can be.. but without something to fight over.. everyone just spreads out and it becomes a nonteam battlemode melee where you just refrain from killing tanks your own color.
On the football field game.. we have no way to test this without static goals.. but based on the blast we have in team scrum.. no question about it.. it would work!

Joe, while "rat hunting" we discovered how awsome it was to defend an area of map with 3-5 tanks while other tanks tried to converge on our turf and kill us to control the hill...Albeit the "area" was defined by trash talking.. such as "stay off our hill vile demo rat filth".. this seemed to spur the type of coordination we desired in our advesary and made them charge in sufficient numbers... sometimes followed by

TD, we should organize a CTF game with the regs. I think th blue levels might be most appropriate. thoughts?

It's like a team KOTH variant, sounds promising. I think between that and the CTF ideas, we'll have the programmers carpal tunnelling in no time :).TD, we should organize a CTF game with the regs. I think th blue levels might be most appropriate. thoughts?

The field game concept with static goals has some promise too. Certainly a different direction though i think it could be done without undo complication of the game.
I don't look forward to encountering the "heavy" guarding the goal.

My impromptu sessions of KOTH vs Demo's was fun. It made you perform more as a team than the current battlemode version. The field game concept with static goals has some promise too. Certainly a different direction though i think it could be done without undo complication of the game.

Passing the scrum a very short distance seems pretty cool to me. Alot of good ideas here. I would like to second the notion of more than two teams on the field at one time. I've played with some guys with smaller teams and it was a very fun dynamic.
