Which Engine Question

Hey
Why do people ask for comparasion on the engines on this site/forums cuase all they are going to get is a basis answer in the favour of torque , don't get me wrong im not hounding at GG here , if i was to go to power render and ask the same question i would get that power render is better.
It not about which engine is better its all about marketing and which company can get the indie developers money and well i don't blame them.
(im not saying GG are doing anything bad its just life its like Nvidia and Ati fighting to get peoples money for their products, or the age old directx3d vs Opengl forum question, heck if i had an engine i would say it was better then torque or powerrender just to get some money )
im just saying for all new people looking for an engine ,
Please try them out for your self in some why or another like trail version looking at stuff that has been made by that engine , like making mod for Realmwars or tribes 2 . The best engine for the developer aint the one with the most features or the best graphics its the one that the team can use to get the job done the best. e.g easy to learn ,best support and have somethign up and running sooner rather then later and no person but your self can work that out.
what im getting at here is that sometimes u can't just go on people word u have to look at the stuff your self.
Cheers

(How many of these questions will come up here?)

Torque is probably the best. it is certainly not because i REALLY like it. its the fact theres a whole community out there to get help, and share help. i have never seen a better engine than torque anywhere. now i may not be searching hard enough but believe you me, i saw a 2d game engine that was $550 to licence. everyone, and anyone who probably will come to this community will think the same, Torque it is. :-)(How many of these questions will come up here?)

Seeing that kind of rational community almost makes me go and buy Torque. I just can't make up my mind if it's the best engine for me...! ;D

I've read a few threads here which ask about the best engine, and, unlike many message boards I've seen, the majority of replies were well reasoned comments with no hint of fanboyism. :) In at least one case the advice to the person was that Torque wasn't the best solution for them! :)Seeing that kind of rational community almost makes me go and buy Torque. The non-Torque engines tend to fall into one of three groups:
1) They aren't full game engines, just the skeletons of game engines, or in many cases just the skeleton of a graphics engine. This may be just what you need in some cases... but if you're a beginner, this isn't a good place to start.
2) Legal issues. Quake2 source is available (as an example), but you need to abide by the GPL licensing to use it. Maybe this works out for you, maybe it doesn't. Of course with Torque, you also have legal/licensing issues, but they are much more straightforward to deal with.

Well, speaking as someone who is actually not using Torque on my current project (though I do have a license), I'd say that if people have to ask which engine to use Torque is likely their best bet.The non-Torque engines tend to fall into one of three groups:

I can see that MY thread had a little influence with YOUR thread........."Im a little confused now:(". Well the reason some of us ask this is because WE don't know which is better. Asking shouldn't be a deal anyways, We just have to know these things. Otherwise, we would end up buying something crappy (not Torque of course). Im NOT offended by your thread, just thought I would explain my thoughts:D

and
2. does it suit you needs.
But the trick is to find out what your needs are before hand.

Its like this, every person is different. In reality there is no "perfect" or "best" engine, its a question of what suits the developer at time they are developing. You might like your coffee with two sugars, the next person might like it with one, one might like milk, one might like no milk. Its really a question of 1. what the engine providesand
2. does it suit you needs.
But the trick is to find out what your needs are before hand.

Exactly......
Torque 3D Owner Marco Meier
Slickware Games
But it is a fact that torque is a really good engine. I would buy it again :)
