Getting started

by Stephen Cool · in General Discussion · 07/01/2003 (8:24 pm) · 13 replies

Can someone direct me to some good sites/tutorials for getting started. I am not looking at putting out a great game or anthing, I just want to play with the concepts and methods of 3D maps/modeling/engines/characters/coding etc just to get a feel for the technologies available. I am currently using 3ds Max 5 and MS Visual c++ 5, I dont even know if this is a good combo or not, its just what was available. Thanks for any guidance.

www.gamedev.net // Lots of programming help

www.gimp.org // A free image editor similar to photoshop

msdn.microsoft.com // Service Packs, and a LOT of help for the programming side

www.pscode.com // Planet Source Code... I think you can figure that one out

Not really a useful post but:

Tylenol // For the coding headaches.
Coffee // Keep you awake to keep trying.
Padded Room // For when you drive yourself crazy.

Point is, starting out is a painful experience. Its nice to see that your asking for guidance, but no matter how much people might lead you in the right direction... It'll be a relatively painful experience. But I'd say the end result is worth it.

If something feels above your grasp, try another technique or technology to learn. The added knowledge will likely help you out when you go back to it later. Dont give up, dont be afraid to ask for help, and make sure you do things yourself! You wont truely understand anything if all you do is copy and paste code from tutorials.

Is Tylenol strong enough for 3D modelling headaches?

No way, Tylenol sucks. Excedrin's the only way to go. (And the extra caffeine in them don't hurt either!) ;-)

As for your original question Stephen, here's another link - GameTutorials

And remember not to give up. Everyone was a n00b at some point. The key is to not listen to all the people who say you can't, but to listen to yourself say you can.

Don't forget flipcode.com, I think they have a couple older C++ tutorials for 3D in DirectX. I'm just too lazy to hunt them for you =)

I always point new developers to Nehe's Tutorials

If you're looking for tutorials/training in the 3D modelling side of things, check out
www.3dbuzz.com. They've got good video tutorials and links for 3DS Max, Maya, Motionbuilder, and UnrealEd. The tutorials are well made, such that even a clot like me (who's tried teaching himself C++ numerous times) is able to grasp the concepts and apply them.

Robotic_rain:

You should have created a new thread, rather than posting that link to this thread.

Your site has nothing to do with starting in game development, which is the topic of this thread.
