Unruly scrum crowd?

Is it my imagination or were the scrum games much more fun a month ago? It seems like everyone playing now on scrum plays battlemode at the same time. It is so much less fun when people feel the need to shoot everyone even if they are nowhere near the scrum. It started with a couple people here and there and now it just isn't fun anymore. It is a pity because it was such a blast! Is there anything to be done? I hate to just let the game go because of people seeming to be pissed off all the time screaming REVENGE!

and I am nearly dead and in need of a new tank... no use getting the scrum just to be killed on the next shot.
I have played with many who dive after every goal close to a ledge.. it never really seemed to give them an advantage though.
As far as being accused of "camping" by taking the scrum away close to the goal... I get that one ALL the time.. one of my staple moves is to pursue to the goal and take the scrum away seconds before you score.. Just remember people get mad when you "steal" from them =)
Plus.. as I have said before.. I don't not camp because I think its wrong.. I don't camp because I can score more by hitting the open field and stealing it there. If you are close to the goal with the scrum... you can bet I will be there to take it.. call it what you want.

Cliff diving is a tactic I seldom use.. it just doesn't feel sportsmanlike.. I will only do it if its a VERY heated match involving some of our eliminator players (you know who you are)and I am nearly dead and in need of a new tank... no use getting the scrum just to be killed on the next shot.

What's everyone's take on that?
08/05/2003 (5:31 am)
Ah, here's a new topic -- Suicide... How does everyone feel about that? While I don't have a vested interest in how the other players conduct themselves, I've alway felt that I'd somehow lose a bit of honor (as much as an Ass Clone can have!) if I committed suicide in hopes of respawning healthy and anew. I feel obliged to see each tank life through to it's natural death.I'd rather be shot dead as I run smoking toward the scrum than to jump ship... No disrespect to Tank Dork. What's everyone's take on that?

I do think that there is a place for sportsmanship in TT. The games which have the oldtimers in in are much more fun and I think "fairer" (if it can be). Lately the scrum matches have become more about luck than anything else. All the tanks head for the goal and bang around until they just happen to score. This gets old and boring (and frustrating). I would like to see some thought put towards moving the play back to the field. Maybe;
A pause between respawns so tanks are not disposable?
A goal that causes damage?
A larger goal?
Reduced shots (per clip, or longer time between) for all tanks in scrum?
Never respawn at the goal?
I know some of these items have been discussed before. If the "shoot'em up" aproach was softened a little more empahsis would shift to driving and tatics (at least in my world).
One other item which might be interesting concerns the maps. Is it possible to have the game spawn a random map? I mean actual terrain being random not which map.
As I said idle thoughts....

Surely, wherever Ass is, IT's sphincter must be cringing is absolute disgust that an overly-sweet, flakey, Greek pastry and a penis are conniving to take valour away from the battlefield!

It is with a melancholic nostalgia that I reflect back to the day when The Great Ass was cloned. Those of us who knew "Ass" well, were very aware that in order to preserve the dignity and fortitude of a great warrior, the procedure would have to be done. Ass could not and would not allow the deceit and malevolence of the growing populace to overthrow IT and make a mockery of the instituition that IT had built up.Surely, wherever Ass is, IT's sphincter must be cringing is absolute disgust that an overly-sweet, flakey, Greek pastry and a penis are conniving to take valour away from the battlefield!

Well, @#$%. I broke my wrist today (yet another unfortunate victim of skateboarding), So I'll be impared for the next six weeks. It isn't a major break, just a fracture on that bone about 4 inches down from your little finger. It was my aiming hand, so im gonna suck for awhile, at least until I get used to this damned cast. *mutter*

I've been accused of camping myself, and I also found this odd considering this is a game where one of the objects is to make sure one of your team members gets in the goal with the flag. I never sit in the goal, however -- that's actually a pretty stupid move since you have to spin around and try to see everyone coming at you. I find it much better to sit several yards away on a hill where I can see the fray and trying to play artillery on the enemy, then running down the hill and in behind my own team member if it has the flag to block tanks chasing him or her.
I also am not above shooting folks a few times to make them smoke so I or team members can pick them off should they get the flag and get close to the goal. It seems a viable tactic, and is used on me often enough, too.
I've been told by many that I should play the light tank, but frankly I get bored in a game that is all light tanks buzzing around, chasing each other, bumping into one another at the goal until one scores. I think a mix of light, medium, and heavy tanks playing as a concerted team is much more interesting...
Hmm... I hope I haven't made it onto any lists. :)

This is an excellent thread. I just wanted to add that I love playing Team Scrum and I usually play the Heavy Tank and attempt to run interference and blocking for light tank team members. I'm sometimes successful; I have more fun with it than trying to do battle with all the other light tanks as a light tank because I'm not very coordinated and quick myself. :)I've been accused of camping myself, and I also found this odd considering this is a game where one of the objects is to make sure one of your team members gets in the goal with the flag. I've always enjoyed matches where there's a mixture of tank sizes. I especially enjoy watching a Heavy Tank try to sprint toward the goal with a scrum as it gets blasted by a million cannons, yet still keeps moving.
One thing that I think could be improved upon is the effect of inertial mass and velocity of the Heavy Tanks. When it comes to pushing, the Heavies don't seem to have an advantage over light tanks. You would think that a Heavy going full speed would be able to plow through a pack of light tanks simply because of its velocity and greater mass, but this doesn't seem to be the case.
Is this something that could be refined more in game play?

Keep the faith Dementus. People are probably just as jealous of your bulky tank's strength as they are of my muscles.I've always enjoyed matches where there's a mixture of tank sizes. I had thought about this myself, especially when playing block, but then I figured it might make the game a bit too lopsided in favor of heavy tankers who DO sit in the goal :) among other possible gameplay issues.
If it took shaving something off the other heavy tank abilities to allow for some more mass , I'd be cool with it.

I concur with ass clone. the dif. classes should have diff weights. i thought it would come with an update, but alas. would really add a strategic element. back to class,..,,

Anyway, I'd like to see a heavier heavy too. Even though it's been souped up, it's still not very useful in scrum. Weight might balance that. But it would have to be tested a bunch to get the right balance, we don't want it to powerful...
The only problem I see is that you would no longer be able to use a light to knock a heavy onto Bot Falls Island. :(
...And if it's a change that will break the currently distributed demos, then you can't expect a change anytime soon...

I think that bolstering the heavy tanks abilities by giving it more mass would level the playing field a bit. As it stands, the light tanks completely dominate scrum. Even a seasoned player is hard pressed to score in a Heavy. I think you are correct though in predicting that a Heavy could sit in a goal and be hard to move. This may change the way light tanks have to deal with it. Instead of rolling up next to the heavy and pushing, they may have to build up more velocity for a bigger bonk. As always, a heavy sitting in the goal will probably have to be blasted. Typically the pack of light tanks ends up whamming it out of the way anyhow.
It may be worth testing. It could change the heavy tank from just being a novelty item to being a viable competitor.

It would be even easier to do so with even a slightly larger goal...
08/07/2003 (9:59 am)
Fast tanks could get behind the heavy, where it can't shoot or see you, and creep slowly into the goal - so as not to hand off the ball to the heavy. It would be even easier to do so with even a slightly larger goal...
