Unruly scrum crowd?
by Jeff Axline · in ThinkTanks · 06/26/2003 (11:40 pm) · 65 replies
Is it my imagination or were the scrum games much more fun a month ago? It seems like everyone playing now on scrum plays battlemode at the same time. It is so much less fun when people feel the need to shoot everyone even if they are nowhere near the scrum. It started with a couple people here and there and now it just isn't fun anymore. It is a pity because it was such a blast! Is there anything to be done? I hate to just let the game go because of people seeming to be pissed off all the time screaming REVENGE!

Baba, I just want to point out that some people buy the game without ever being demos, and that demo or not isn't a completely accurate way to tell how experienced someone is. Also, demos can't get into spooky or team games, so those are sort of reserved for registered players.Sorry, Gromit, I'll try not to bring names in again.

I was mainly thinking about non team scrum games where demo's, due to be restricted to a slower tank, end up sitting around or in the goal and just blasting at anyone indiscriminatly.
Inded skill/experience level varies widely registered or not.

It's interesting how it is such a gray area between playing competitively and just being mean spirited. There was someone who posted a thread on this forum complaining about abusive players and naming them. This same player, lets call him......oh I don't know, lets say..... TH. A very well respected player that has been around for a while. This guy gives me all his guns plainly well after I score a goal. A simple revenge kill. I say "whats up with that?" and his answer is " it's a legitimate tactic". At this point I have to ask myself what isn't a legitimate tactic? Then the same player complains about others during the game. I have certainly lost the respect I once had for this guy. He is no better than the players he named in his "name and shame" thread. Why post all this? I guess my point is that there is nothing we can really do to direct the game the way we want it. I'll play and then stay when it is fun and leave when people are arsses. I guess I have to stop worrying about people who just want to play battlemode all the time.

Not the unintentional collisions or chaos around the goal hits, but obvious snatches.
There is a player who has done this on numerous occasions (I'll not name names but he showed up on FP's top 5 list recently) and while I won't cry about it, as a newer player learning my chops, I do think it's a case of someown putting their ego ahead of the team and as such negative to the team.

What do you think about players on your team who intentionaly snatch the flag from you in team scrum games? Not the unintentional collisions or chaos around the goal hits, but obvious snatches.

Don't know the circumstances, but if your tank is shot up badly then taking the flag may keep the team from losing it.

don't misquote something i said in-game.
i'm not going to to switch threads and quote myself. what do you mean "abusive?" i'm not sure my thread had anything to do with abusive language. it's about players who go around the scrum board with no regard for the scrum, only scoring kills, which incidently, don't score. in and around the scrum, if you are trying to score or have just scored, an emptying clip might find you.
such is life.

T.H. - Not sure why you started your last entry with my name since it dosn't seem to relate to what I was saying. I'm sure whoever you were referring to will get your point though.

John - Yes if you are smokin' badly and a distance from the goal it might be entirely appropriate to "relieve" an ailing teammate of the flag. That, however, was not the case when I was pickpocketed a few times by a TT luminary.T.H. - Not sure why you started your last entry with my name since it dosn't seem to relate to what I was saying. Uh.. I think you are referring to me. It was not a stray clip. It was a revenge kill and we messaged about it afterward. You said it was "a viable strategy" at the time. That is not a misquote. The earlier thread was about people whose gameplay you didn't like. I don't think it is really that important that you didn't use the word abusive. I was trying to get the main idea across. You can say whatever you wish about the situation. I know what happened and it seems that we have to now expect this kind of gameplay on the scrum field. I believe at this point this thread isn't really that viable. Think Tanks is becoming what it is and all we can do is try to have fun. Some nights are great, others are frustrating.Such is life.

jeff-
[ remind me what your name is online plz ] can't imagine i said that it was "a viable strategy" there was nothing viable about it, at least in my opinion. what was the context? was the next scrum close? was it far away? i know remember discussing it, and i remember something resembling a thought process.
regardless, if i remember correctly, it was a move designed to advance my position in the game, not get revenge on you, even though i replied to your question as if affirming truth within it.
or maybe i was just a little pissed. :)
ps. asserting that TT is 'becoming what it is', for me, is defeatist to the juvenility. by refusing to swim through the poo that had been thrown down the past few weeks, bunches of us have been able to have the good scrum games we've come accustomed to.
thus, for me, this thread (with specific reference to its title) can rest for now.
see you fooks online :)

There already are servers of this type. The Spooky and Frantic map types are not available to demo players. SO if you go into battlemode or scrum frantic, it will be demo free.
BTW, the frantic maps are really good for getting better driving skills in the light tanks. Lots of places to perfect the cartwheel maneuver.

Quote:non-team, non-demo servers. is that a good idea?

1, What are these frantic maps? Obviously the green ones with trees are lush, but where is the distinction between frantic and spooky?
2, Just out of curiosity, what is the cartwheel maneuver? Or is it too hard to explain in text?
8-] Go TT !

Unless I'm mistaken, Lush maps are the pretty green ones, Spooky maps are the foggy blue ones, and Frantic maps are the volcanic red ones with the falling rocks.Gromit

maps is that you spend way to much time in the air. Good driving
aside it just gets to be too much. Maybe adjust the gravity a little
on those maps.

When playing scrum any shot intended to kill someone that does not further your own chance to score or stop someone else from scoring is solely intended as a revenge act or a griefing act.
When you see "SoandSo has been eliminated by Tank Dork" you can know that I have just increased my chances to score yet again.
After you score I am way to busy chasing the new scrum to revenge kill.. however I may pop off a few parting shots as I fly by.
A few players have fell because I saw excessive smoke and couldn't help myself.. but all in all I try not to..
Although most battlemode scrum players will never lead the board.. we have one who can do both.. #1 TANKSTER can keep you pissed off while steadily increasing his gains.. Just add him to your mental list of Kill on Sight and move on.
"Tank Dork has been eliminated by #1 TANKSTER!"
"Damn it not again!!!"

Campers will reap their own rewards (hopefully death as they lay like a sitting duck)
Battlemoders won't score because they spend too much time shooting (they're actually kinda of nice when your smoking and need a recharge)
Profanity (I'm guilty here) is almost a necessesity when in war it seems... and it is war folks. I'll try to kill you in a second if i think it's necessary... or maybe just for fun... and insult you all the while. Some people think the language is harsh, but I think the "colorful" dialogue is a great assett to the game. What's better than bragging and show-boating right after you score, killing a few smoking tanks on the way.... fun fun. And you have to admit everyone likes a sick joke now and again.
As long as people keep it positive, I think we can overlook the occassional indescressions. Lots of you folks are really good with the praise - ie "n1, gg, etc" set the tone for new players and keep the bragging and insulting in check.
Anyway, I look forward to kicking all your asses. And just remember I will win because NO ONE CAN WITHSTAND THE ASS CLONE ARMY!!!!!
I'm serious... no one...

I just read this thread thru today and am kinda bummed at peoples reluctance to play with newbies and aggressive players. I think FPs attitude, as brusque as it is, is the way to go. It's crazy to set up rules or a code of conduct in a game like this. Campers will reap their own rewards (hopefully death as they lay like a sitting duck)

I have scored many an easy point after being eliminated.
The day that Bravetree takes away the random respawn after elimination or adds "spawn away from action" is the day scrum will cease to be fun for all but battlemoders.
"Tank Dork has been eliminated!"
"Tank Dork has scored a goal!"

Well put Clax.. that is the great equalizer in Think Tanks scrum. That is why I like to "soften" up my opponents while running for a loose scrum rather than eliminating them, especially after they score.. when I know the goal is across the map from me!I have scored many an easy point after being eliminated.

And yes, I could simply have left the server, but classical conditioning tells us that a behavior needs only be rewarded once in twenty tries in order to be reinforced. I'd like to think I was doing a public service by sticking out the game. ;)
