Do any one like turn base stratagy games ?

by Yuval · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 06/26/2003 (12:23 pm) · 18 replies

I want to create a
turn base stratagy game
but with better battles
and with real stratagy

but i dont know if it worth
the effort
i think the only hard think to do in
a turn base stratagy game
is to create the AI
of you opponent
but if you create such a game without
a computer opponent
it shold take only a few month
to create

so if you like that kind of games
let me know
and send me ideas
for magic in the game
like magic that change a
terrain on the map
or an option that improve the stratagy part of the game

First, I encourage you to go ahead. If you put innovation and fun over a classic genre, then you can score a hit.

Some months ago, if someone have said to me "play this sidescroller game" I'd roll my eyes and reffuse. But I played Duke Nukem Manhattan Project and simply loved it. The guys ressurected a classic with state of the art graphics, with beautiful and fun results. I admire the guts and creativity of those guys.

About terrain, since it can be changed and painted ingame by the mission editor, where you can even save the changes, I don't think it's much of a problem to do it by script. But you'll surely have to relight the scene dynamically too.

Lol, for a minute, I thought you posted a poem....

I actually want to work on a turn based strategy game myself, after we finish our current project. Nothing super fancy...but accessible, easy to pick up and play, like Advance Wars, or the old game Military Madness for the Turbographx-16.

I would say to go for it. Maybe you ccan try to do it on a different platform, like for a Pocket PC or Cell Phone game. Either way I saw go for it :)

Hi,

We're knee-deep in the development of Strategem which is a turn-based game with a few twists. We're blending the kind of graphics you'd see in a FPS into a turn-based strategy game. We've been working extremely hard over the last six months and the project is coming together wonderfully.

If you are developing a multi-player product I can't stress enough how important having AI players will be to you. The problem of people purchasing it and not having anyone to play with can be a stumbling block to market. We're working on our AI players right now.

Have a look at our virtual company Skunkworks.

You should be seeing dev-snapshots from us fairly soon. We want to show shots of the actual game being played and not simply disjointed shots of gui screens/models.

Turn based stratagy games are some of my fav.. But it what kind do you wish to create, one where you build cites and deal with an ecomony and diplomatic things or more squad level tatics? If you want it based on a fantasy setting, Master of Magic is a great game to take a look at.. it feature different school of magic, cities to build, heroes to hire, creatures to summon, spells to research and other fun stuff. The spell system is very very cool, some effect combat ((which is zoomed in turn based with all the units in an army)) or a city, or the entire realm. it has very poor grapics and the AI is not to good but its a blast to play. and you can change the terrain ((i know the chaos magic and cause volcano's to erupt on the land messing with cities resources)) and for combat would it be zoomed in tatics or more like the Civ games where units fought until one dies?? well i'll stop babbling now ((5:00 am is fun)) and now a fun Dune quote..

There should be a science of discontent. People need hard times and oppression to develop psychic muscles.

Ya know, I was considering making one not long ago. I would love to see what you come up with, because these games can be really, really good.

I would like to make some small strategy games, but I'm working on easier stuff first.

I love turn based games.

I do not like turn based games (multiplayer) that does not have some sort of infrastructure to make sure someone who went afk does not ruin the entire game.

And of course, it might inspire you if you read some from The Complete Wargames Handbook (correct name?). I don't have a link, but you can find it on Hernan Moraldo's www.hhm.com.ar site, or just Google it. The book is pretty geeky (IMHO) but you might find some things to think about before and while you design.

TOTALLY.. they're the absolute best. XCOM was one of the finest games ever made.

However, as said: Nobody has yet come up wiht a way of doing multiplayer, team-based strategy.

My favorite game is a turn based strategy game with "better battles and real strategy," Go. Here is my website for a local club that's built around playing this game:

As others have said, though, making a good game is more about creativity and solid design than about choosing the genre.

Absolutely.

I mean - Civilization, anyone?

I am also a big fan of the older Master of Orion games, as well as the turn-based X-Com games. I've gotten hooked on the shareware version of SLAY, recently. And the old Empire games sucked away much of my life as a college student.

For me, it's more about appealing subject matter and interesting gameplay mechanics. Combine those and you have that pull to do "just one more turn." I love that.

I still enjoy turn based strategy games, and you do not even have to leave it as a simple turn base strategy game. Think about what happens after enemy units come into contact with each other. Jerane Alleyne mentioned Military Madness (one of the greatest turn based games ever), the same company released another game for the Turbo Graphix CD called vasteal. In this game as soon as two units came into contact the game switched to an arcade like shooter. Also, X-com (my favority turn base game) is a classic that I still like to play, and it approached the genre with innovation and still has a cult following. Bottom line is you have a lot of options, and I recomend planning out the game first so you don't get lost or fall victim to feature creep.

I absolutely love TBS games - especially anything that ends in the word "Tactics".

One pitfall that I could suggest you try to avoid is the ability to Uberize your team to the point that the strategy doesn't matter. Far too many games allow parties to become so powerful that it becomes a matter of hack and slash rather than the use of actual strategy.

The idea of using environmental elements is something that is often overlooked too (destroying a bridge to kill off a bunch of troops for instance).

Oh, and if you are playing against an AI, the AI should absolutely be smart enough to kill a character 2 squares away with a few life points left. Or, to use the best possible attacks against your characters.

Have a look at Combat Mission:Beyond Overlord an old game now but still very fun and it can really make you think when played multiplayer.
