Old strategy turns new

I want to create a new version for strategy 'Warlords and Civilization' like games.
The game will take place in a fantasy world.
I have some new ideas for combat in the game. It will be a simple 2D game.
Note: You will play a commander, or a general in it's fullest concept.
Ideas for combat:
1: The combat will take place on the map. But the ranged units, unlike in all these games, will be able to fire to a certain distance.
2:"Out of Control Combat" What does it mean?
In combat the player will be able to send a command to a unit, by sending a messenger, but the unit itself - that engages in combat has a life of it's own and it will attack by it's chosen strategy. It will be like Medieval Combat.
So tell me what you think about it.
May it be various ideas, new units and their special abilities or whatever you have in mind.
And i am in a need of fellow programmers who might assist me in my project's development.

I think I would prefer to have complete control over the units in combat, but that's just my opinion.

So more of the strategy would be in the set up then in the battle?? If you cannot control units right away then they would need to be setup before the hectic combat. It's a cool idea i must say. Also the concept of reserves as you don't know exactly how the enemy would set up. And retreat points and formations. would there be city building and what not, or just armies fighting?? also turn-based or real-time?? The concept sounds like it would work better in real-time to me.. just some ideas in the form of questions.. and now for another Dune quote..
