Can't import model from collada format with armature
by Joel Stephens · in Artist Corner · 03/15/2010 (4:13 pm) · 8 replies
I'm trying to import a model from a collada file that has been exported from blender. The model is imported fine without an armature but if I add just a single bone then the mesh is not imported. The importer says there are 0 polygons in the model. It looks like the armature is being imported when viewed in the shape editor but even that doesn't look right.
I'm just learning this thing so I might just be doing something dumb.

Also I should note that I am using the built in collada exporter in blender 2.5 alpha 2.

Well, I'm not using any of those features in this model. No level of detail or collision mesh. I don't even have a texture applied. Its just the standard cube to test. The cube by itself imports fine but if I add a single bone as a modifier then the mesh is not imported, only the armature. Also I should note that I am using the built in collada exporter in blender 2.5 alpha 2.

are you parenting the mesh to the armature? in object mode select your model, then shift select a bone and hit Ctrl P.

I uploaded my collada file if someone want to download it and try it. www.megaupload.com/?d=F0ACDSQD

I tried setting the mesh as a parent to the armature but had no effect. Still only the nodes are imported, no mesh.I uploaded my collada file if someone want to download it and try it. www.megaupload.com/?d=F0ACDSQD

If so you will need to select your node (empty), the mesh and your bone to be exported correctly.
I am not sure if this works, because i am currently not on my workstation, but i will check this this evening and will inform you.

Hmm ... maybe did you checked in your COLLADA exporter 'only export selected' (or however it called in your exporter)? If so you will need to select your node (empty), the mesh and your bone to be exported correctly.

Only thing i did was create a cupe and a armature, then made the cupe child of the armature, keep selected both and exported them with 'Only Export Selection'.
Maybe this will help you.
Blender: 2.49b
COLLADA exporter 1.4.0 (Version 0.3.162).
-K.

I am using blender 2.5 witch has its own collada exporter built in. It might just be a problem with the alpha version of blender not exporting correctly.

This is maybe the problem, 2.5a is not for productiv system and the will be alot of bugs and not working functions. Try it again with 2.49.-K.
