I thought RW was a medieval RPG? also, isn't Dungeon Siege a medieval RPG as well as Never Winter Nights?

anyways to answer your question we would need more information. Is this to be texted based? where you could do it in like perl? would it be 2D/3D and require DX/OGL (or a wrapper for DX/OGL)?

You should focus on either programming or Art to start.

If you focus on Art, go to milkshape3d.com and buy a copy - it's only about $25. At some point in your professional career you'll upgrade to more expensive software, but milkshape is good to start for a 3d modeller. Paintshop Pro is my recommended program for textures or 2d sprites, but windows paint will do in a pinch.

If you decide to try programming, go to www.bloodshed.net/ and get Bloodshed Dev-C++ (it's free). You'll also need to get a book on C++ from your local bookstore - 'Learn C++ in 21 days' isn't a bad one for a beginner. Work through the book and pick up a game development book _AFTER_ you've worked through the basics of C++.

Realize that either focus is going to take years to throughly learn - you may not be ready to start working on your game idea for quite a while. Start very small. Tetris or pong are good beginner projects.

Good luck!

Its a 3d medieval RPG but its like a frist person shooter also like if oyu get shot in the foot with the arrow in real life you would get the same effects in game life. same like you get sabed ECT..

Before you can make any game at all, you'll need to learn how to program or how to do something else (like art) that someone will need for a game. Mark had some good suggestions about this.

My big advice to you is to try to make several easy-to-make games before you try to make the one you've mentioned. Go to http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~amitp/gameprog.html to get some ideas about what kind of a game to make.

There are at least 2 reasons why the game you mentioned would be really hard to make:

a) it's 3d
b) it's an RPG (RPGs are alot of work)

Also, you'll need to elaborate much more upon what you want the game to be before the actual programming starts.

RPGs are a lot of work, I'm not sure if you'd be interested in this approach, but you could try:

Make a 2D RPG first, either programmed from scratch in C++ to learn the language or even just made with a easy to use Game making program like Gamemaker or Explorations or something similar (There are a lot about). The advantage of this is it gives you a taste of what work is involved, generally lets you finish your first game quickly (finishing SOMETHING is always more important than starting a big ambitions project and not getting anywhere), and also lets you try out your ideas for aspects of the gameplay, story, character developemtn etc. It won't have the realism and fancy graphics you ultimately desire, but you'll get a taste for game making get to try out your ideas and probably even get something out of it to play.

This approach would help tackle problem b) that Steve mentioned and then once you finish you could work on problem a).

I'm not making an RPG anymore, but this is the approach I took to start making games and I found it useful.

Good luck however you decide to work on it.

Hay thx nick but i did that with RPG maker 2000 and i wont to try to tack it to the next lvl but i am going to try the programs you suggested and i am going to try to learn the C++ language and computer animation i have the milkshape 3D program for. but i am haveing a littel bit of trouble learning how to make the person in the milkshape program to move if any one can give me some ideas how to do it and how joints work it will be apecated and also i am pretty young to be doing some heavy dutty stuff but i am ready to take my computer skills to the nexts lvl i think. also i got Dev-C++ and i think that would take some time to learn with out a teacher so if some one could give me some tips there i would thank you ALOT. Thanks everone so far and you are making my dream's come true. Thanks
