by John Doe · in Torque Game Engine · 06/18/2003 (2:50 pm) · 23 replies

I am strongly thinking of purchasing the torque engine, but I am not sure if my level of experience will alow me to create a game.

1. I have basic experiance with C++

2. I have worked with map editing for many differnt games, and some in game scripting

3. I have intermediate skills with grafics and 3D

I am wondering how hard it is to get started wiht this engine, and what sort of things are the hardest to make, please answer at any leangth, I just want a little none seller info.

Until you guys are ready right Jeff?

:)

GG rocks and keeps getting better.

Torque is the best deal

1) $100 for an engine that came out around Quake 3 and can hold its own. You don't see Id selling their engine for $100. More like 1000 times that.

2) An awesome community that is very willing to help you out.

3) A ton of resources that you can add to enhance the engine and/or get you a leg up instead of reinventing the wheel. You can focus more on making a fun game than worrying about adding basic things to your game.

4) A publishing deal that in my opinion cannot be beat. Especially for an individual or small team.

In short i'm very impressed by GG's.

They got fed up with the industry and decided to do it their way. Independent developers are reaping the benefits for it.

I only have one question. I'm more interesting in making a racing game of some sort with at least reasonable driving physics. Is it worthwhile to purchase Torque with that in mind? I probly won't ever make an FPS with it. :)

Tim added some really nice vehicle physics. We had a blast playing multi-player buggy racing when he was testing them. They are good enough that we actually considered releasing a game with them, and some day, we still might. Torque comes with a racing mod starter kit.
