Wanting to make a side-scrolling game

I'm wanting to make a side-scrolling game like Super Mario Bros. as a present for my son's birthday and wondering if there are any tutorials on making one. Also was looking at the platformer kit and was wondering if that could be used to make one. If anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it.

The platformer kit is completely a side scrolling game like mario or sonic or such. You have to own the source version of TX2D to buy it.
