Torque Game Builder or Torque 2D so which is it?

by Robert Clarke · in Torque Game Builder · 02/24/2010 (11:28 pm) · 14 replies

Hey guys,
I've been lurking around the Garage Games website for a few weeks, and have been playing around with the TGB demo. I notice that the terms TGB and T2D are used interchangeably a lot, however sometimes I see people on forums referring to them as separate things. So what’s the difference? Are they the same or is one of them newer than the other? Isn’t Torque 2D just TGB for the iPhone. Thanks.

TGB is what you can currently get for the desktop systems supported. T2D is the name of the new generation.

Torque 2D for iPhone is the name of the current iPhone variant, formerly known as iTGB. It's not quite the same as TGB anymore, but still not the same as desktop T2D (which still is in development).
Just to confuse matters, the engine used to be called T2D in the early days, before they settled on TGB :)

TGB acts as payment towards whatever you get next (T2Di is really $250 TGB+$500 iPhone engine), so if you've got a project you're ready to start on, no need to wait.

Also, just to confuse matters, I'll say "TGB" when I'm referring to the builder and "T2D" when I'm referring to the engine (since that's the directory it is in).

Lol nice and clear then! Okay then so if I start my project in TGB then when T2D desktop comes out I should be able to port my project farely easily?

When TGB first came out, it was called T2D. After a few patches and interface changes in the level builder it started to be called TGB. Which makes sense because the builder is used for building the game screens, levels, and general game mechanics. With behaviors being added you can almost build an entire game without any code. This is when TGB started to be used.

Now it seems that T2D is coming back into use becuase a fundimental shift is being made. Which I think is going to be good for the engine.

So is there a proposed feature set and release date laying around somewhere for torque 2d?

Nevermind I noticed the sticky thread.

No one knows for sure how easy or difficult it will be to port a project from TGB to T2D yet. It has been recommended that if you start a professional game project in TGB, it's best to continue using TGB to release your game.

If you are not under any sort of time pressure or game making is more of a hobby, go in with the assumption that you'll have to rewrite all your game scripts in whatever language T2D ends up using, along with rebuilding your levels from scratch, learning new editors, etc. This way you can be pleasantly surprised if a TGB to T2D project converter is released instead of cursing the T2D staff if a conversion tool is not possible.

Hey Mike, I’m not entirely sure what I am asking here, but if support for TGB dries up when T2D is released, would there be any foreseeable problems with me releasing a TGB based game.

I doubt that support for TGB will completely dry up when T2D is released. The TGE forums, the "original" engine that is about 2 generations old, still gets a fair amount of traffic and help from its users. I would guess/hope that the same will be true of TGB.

There won't be a license issue either. When you buy the engine, you are bound by that license agreement. Therefore, you'll still be able to publish games with no problems that don't go against the agreement.

Thanks William that was the answer I was hoping for.

though its to expect that TGB will vanish from store on the day of T2Ds release, so if you plan to expand upon it in the future with larger teams that would be a bad decision likely

Any idea as to the price point of T2D? Also, if one purchases TGB today, how much of that purchase price will be applicable to T2D?

Or is TGB BECOMING T2D? Like if you buy TGB today, does that mean you're a T2D owner when it gets released?

Thanks

Nobody knows the price. They haven't decided yet. But there will be an upgrade price from TGB to T2D, that much is certain. They always give the full price of your current engine as discount towards the next one.
