Beta 2 Dedicated server for Linux

by elvince · in Torque 3D Professional · 02/18/2010 (2:30 pm) · 54 replies

Hi,

it has been said that a huge work have been done on this part in Beta1.

Can someone do a quick guide/explanation on how to compile T3D in dedicated server for Linux?

Thanks in advance!

Not expecting a guide or explanation, but perhaps an update on the progress of this if anything. Thanks guys.

For that, you can freely and hardly bash me.

bank has done a good deal of work here and has Linux dedicated up and running. He sent me a good solid amount of patches and being the avoid-the-unpleasant-at-all-cost ass I am, I rather bugged Matt to grant bank write access to the repo so he can commit this himself and spare me the pain of manually merging all this stuff (especially since I can't test any of the Linux-side things myself--and I sure won't set up a VM-hosted Linux for that). This didn't happen and in retrospect, I should have just sit down and put in the boring time and merged the damn thing.

So yeah, I was the point it got stuck at.

I will bump this thread as it has been move down fast in the forum list during beta 2 issues posting.

Thanks,

Thanks for the bump, this and a possible community supported Linux client is the only thing keeping me from using T3D.

@Rene,

I know it's not your priority as it is only a community support but if you can just take 1 minute to tell us if the code has been merged? if not, if it will be merged in BETA3 or at a later stage? or if BETA2 breaks the current implementation and we need Bank to work on it (if he has time^^).

Thanks,

Very sorry guys. I let this thread completely slip through the cracks.

Unfortunately, I don't have good news either. There's been a lot of unexpected stuff going on which constantly pushed this down the list of priorities and it doesn't look like I will be able to come back to this. Maybe bank has some good news.

Sorry to let you down :(

That's not a good news, but a news :D thanks!

I hope bank will confirm that his code is still working in Beta 2 or 3 (soon) and that we can expect to have something in next releases? :D

Or is there any way to share Bank's code/changes? I have no clue how much work it is to put this in place.

thanks,

This would be awesome news.. running windows dedicated servers is costly.

AFAIK bank is pretty swamped ATM with Afterworld keeping him pretty busy.

I'll make sure to point him to the thread next time I catch him.

Thanks.
I think this feature is very interesting for all multiplayer games.

I have running "Full" template of T3D Beta 3 on Linux. Dedicated-only of course.
There are still a lot of changes required to be applied in order to make it working, but last betas already includes some of the changes (thanks Rene & Tom!).

As soon as I find some spare time, I'll prepare the patch and will post the link here.

Notes: I was able to build it only by using GCC 4.1.

this is some good news and thanks for all your hard work bank.
with a dedicated linux server T3D may become a viable option for me, again thanks for all the work you have put in.
