I gave up on on-the-fly particle effects and used a product called timelinefx - highly recommend it.

I also implemented pools for sprites and animated sprites and optimised as much as I could - still more to do!

Thumbs up for making sense. I never got the space invaders thing; why invade space? Space is big! It's meaningless! Invading various places on Earth, however, makes much more sense.
