Asset Management Focus Group: A Call to Questions?

Good day to all indie developers here at Garagegames.com. I just wanted to let you know about our efforts to develop an asset management system aimed at the unique needs of independent game developers. However in order for us to do it right we need your help. We are asking for various team members - artist/designers, programmers, and management - to participate in a focus group. We want to open up a dialog to gain a better understanding of what you need in the way of asset management functionality. There are six planned sessions for this month. I know you probably have questions about our intentions, and what we plan on doing with the information. I glady welcome any questions or inquiries into our plans for developing an asset management system.

To show our good faith we have released the modifications we made to the Photoseek web image management system. We are also willing to assist anyone who wants to setup this system for their own use. We can't promise full support, but we will definitely help you get it up and running as best we can. For those who want to just patch the current Photoseek we will make the patch file available soon. The system runs best on Linux running Apache and MySQL. So please let us know if we can help you and all we ask in return is a little chit-chat. :)

Check out this News Post for preliminary info on the focus group and also our Asset Management page for links on information regarding asset management and the download of Photoseek+Plus.

So let me hear your thoughts so far about asset and production management. Come on, let's see those posts. :)

so asset management is CVS / Perforce etc with thumbnail support ?

you might be able to get some good field testing / feature requirements in regard to the "project graveyard" idea - http://www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=forums&page=result.thread&qt=10572

Yes, this does work in much the same way as CVS does, although the basis of our design is on how an artist, programmer, and manager access the data. It isn't just enough to have data stored somewhere and list versions. What is also needed, as we have seen, is an appropriate way for each type of user to access it. We believe that changing the way assets are accessed can be beneficial to game developers. Before I discuss what concepts we are working on we would like to know how you best believe one should work with assets during game development. How would you describe your workflow and all during developmetn of a project?

Ohh and thanks for the link, I will be sure to check that out.

This sounds interesting. Question, do you have some working online prototype working? I kind of searched (not heavily, though) through your page and didnt find it. If there was something like that with guest passwords for limited access, I think I would be interested trying it out and maybe pointing out some things to improve or necessary to add.

Well Nauris we are working on getting a demo up, but we must wait till the our hosting services has finished their upgrades to implement it. The demo is of the older system and the new one is radically diffrent than what we had before. The new system is both web based and will use a full client application. We don't want to make any promises ahead of time, which is one reason we would like feedback. When our demo is up I will let everyone know so they can see our older system. One thing I can say is that the new system is based off of DoXFS which is an open source document management system. Also if you are interested in setting up the system yourself we will provide help with that. Ohh and to see a demo of the system before it's revisions check this page out > http://photoseek.stir.org. This is just the photo management system, before our revisions, but the interface is pretty much the same. Although we did remove the excess search boxes. But like i said as soon as our hosting services has upgraded their systems we will setup that demo for you all to see. We will also publish the intended feature set of the new system.
