Suggestion to improve spawning

by Toad · in ThinkTanks · 06/01/2003 (12:15 pm) · 11 replies

I've been thinking that there are some improvements to be had in the spawning logic. Is it currently random? There are times when I find my tank spawning on top of other tanks and vice versa. Or sometimes just spawning into the center of a firefight and becomming a quick, no-chance casualty - just after you were elimimated only moments before.

It would seem more sensible for the game to spawn new tanks at the spawn location that has the least number of other tanks near it at that moment.

The randomness can also often seem rather unfair, always spawning some players at the wrong side of the map, whilst spawning others permanently close to the scrum. This can add too large an element of luck to the game i.m.h.o.

In the choosing the random spawn location would it be difficult to implement a check to see how close the proposed location is to the scrum or goal? If within a certain distance to either, then another location is picked? This would mean all players respawn at a minimum set distance from both scrum and goal.

I think just not dropping the new guys onto a large gunfigh would be enough; the rest YOU as the player can exploit, or not and thats your right : your luck.
but dropping on top of another tank in a large fight is a tad silly since you then have no choice at all.

I'm going to be the voice of dissent.

sort of. i don't think there's anything wrong with the system, but i can't articulate why at the moment. my opinion is 75% based on scrum experience, 25% on battlefield.

Just a thought: I assume that they playtested non-random drop ins and went this way for a reason. Maybe that's a better way to frame the discussion.

Tally.

In my opinion,
Alot of the fun of the current game come from the wierd spawn results.
Sometimes you get a lucky spawn.. sometimes you are miles away.
The one thing I have posted before that would help is if goal/scrum spawn and player spawn were different spots. Then you would have no spawing inside goal or with scrum already on your head.

Speaking of getting stuck, a couple times I was stuck in the air, between two "rocks" and couldn't get off. took someone to kill me to release me!

Lucky spawns add a fun element to scrum that hasn't given a great advantage/disadvantage to players that I have seen. I think that most of the time, the player with the most skill will come out at the top. Other times, a less skillful player will win once or twice because of a lucky spawn, but will probably not win too many games overall.

I like to think of a lucky spawn as one of those moments in soccer where a player who's not really involved in an offensive attack suddenly finds the ball at his feet and just needs to gently tap it in order to score a goal. It's a nice reward for being at the right place at the right time.

As for (un)lucky spawns in battlemode, I can see how that can be very frustrating to a player who had already just been destroyed. However, I think that's just part of the game and I haven't found it to be a significant hiderance in having a good game (that's mostly been Dan McDonald).

I vote for a lucky spawn, 100%.

Sometimes you spawn 3 times in a row in the goal or near it. Other games you're always spawning at the very furthest spot on the map (and curse the game!)

Very often did I spawn on the other side of the map, only to go full speed toward the goal and get there (30 seconds later) JUST in time (I'm talking a fraction of a second) to steal the flag and score a goal!
