I've not had problems with win7 nor vista at all with my nvidia and I'm even on aero glas, not basic.
The only two differences are that I don't use widgets as they are known to be trouble makers and that I'm on an nvidia
you might have read the other thread with ideas on the root to check, but if not I would recommend reading it.
Fix: the only fix is to integrate DX9 which is one of the things that was mentioned to be part of T2D.
It can't be done with TGB as the TGE core was never written to have a replacable rendering. the DX8 is at best a "hack in", it never worked performant nor fully bugfree.

it should not be needed at all but seems like either the ati drivers or this specific configuration has problemI've not had problems with win7 nor vista at all with my nvidia and I'm even on aero glas, not basic.

Torque 2D will have the same base rendering system that Torque 3D has which has a much better D3D implementation separate of OpenGL.

Like Marc I never experienced a problem on Vista running TGB, so it sounds like a video driver/card specific issue.Torque 2D will have the same base rendering system that Torque 3D has which has a much better D3D implementation separate of OpenGL.

Anyway it seems to only be a problem with using the editor. I did not have a problem actually running the game under Vista with Aero enabled. I just figured this was worth mentioning because this Aero incompatibility has to do with development not with release. You can release your game and it should run on Vista with or without Aero. If someone has experienced something OTHER than this please reply here.
Max: It sounded like maybe you were having problems with the actual game running?

I don't remember the specific problem I was having with TGB under Vista. I think it was something to do with the mouse cursor flickering around the screen in the editor.Anyway it seems to only be a problem with using the editor. So if the ati driver fuck up opengl support, then either completely or not at all.
best option is to see whats causing the flux.
given that intel x3100 can pull it, ati should be able to do so with pulled handbreaks so something might be interfering. I'm sure that if thats the case you will find references on the board.
The me to great evils are: Widgets (no matter what, don't use them), using some strange window skinning stuff like window blinds and naturally the kind of exotic multiscreen accelerator things.
also what you never must do is installing modded drivers, especially not for ati. the track of "we cut for performance" problems created by them is massive, since the days when I had my last ati with my radeon 9600M

well it makes sense, it runs on the same engine. So if the ati driver fuck up opengl support, then either completely or not at all.

What Video Card are you running?
Seriously, if it's a Nvidia Card I'm going to take my 4850 get a big sledge hammer and record me smashing it to bits, put that up on Youtube and mail the remaining bits of the card back to ATI and say, Here you can have your trash back.

The past two years I have been deving on an Nvidia Ge-Force 8600M I believe. I can relate to your pain, I have seen more issues with ATI cards than with Nvidia (though I use an ATI on my home gaming machine) and said issues have annoyed us in the past =/

Well I did do some more testing and found that if you disable just Aero and left it in basic mode it works fine. Class mode looks way more ugly. As for any more testing I can't do it at the moment since I have my new machine I'm currently building at the moment. I may end up switching to Nvidia, but if Torque 2D is going to be a strong Direct X product I may end up staying with ATI.

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to add to this for any that are running Windows Server 2008 R2 as this appears to be an easy fix. My symptoms were TGB 1.7.5 was not responding on run from desktop shortcut. 1 of 4 CPU's was pegged etc etc as with most in this thread. Seems that simply changing to the Win7 basic theme does the trick (non-Aero). I will add more later if I have any more problems / find any more solutions.

However, you will most likely want to install the Desktop Experience pack for 2008 R2 to get the baseline W7 desktop experience.
I've never considered running a basic engine or most games (other than dedicated servers and the like) on 2008/R2 (or 2000/2003) since it is streamlined for server deployment and not the typical bells and whistles that the desktop OS's are oriented to.

You shouldn't have to disable Aero any longer with 1.7.5.However, you will most likely want to install the Desktop Experience pack for 2008 R2 to get the baseline W7 desktop experience.

[edit] um...i'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, and so went into Personalize and then chose to use the Windows 7 Basic theme. I then ran TGB (which was working with/without aero) but then when i ran my game, after a few seconds, it says "this program has stopped working. Windows Is trying to work out what went wrong."
