Objects coming out as black (but with clouds visible on it)

I've got this strange texture issue when I exported a simple cube from 3DMax in collada format using the ColladaMax exporter.
A search on the forums brought up a few solutions, which I've tried but all to no avail:
1) Triangulating the object
2) Ensuring the texture is a power of 2
3) Doing a full-relight.
Strange thing is, when I attempt to replace the texture with another, it appeared to work. (For example, replacing sand.jpeg with another version of sand.jpeg which has exactly the same properties, except the second one is slightly more speckled)
In advanced lighting, the cube is black (though it appears to be somewhat translucent as the clouds are still visible on it). Under basic lighting, the cube does not appear at all.
Anyone knows what's wrong with this? What's the popular exporter for collada at the moment? I've tried this in both 3DMax 7 and 9, but both have similar issues.
Edit: On further testing, when loading the model, this error pops up in the console:
Material - _1__3___Default(4349) - Failed to load diffuse map art/shapes/custom/village_wall/sand2 for stage 0
If I enter the Shape Editor, and edit the _1__3___Default material, the texture pops up on it's own, and the console prints out the above error message again.
