Multiple Bounding Boxes per object

Maybe I'm approaching this from the wrong angle, but if I wanted multiple damage areas on the player would this be done via multiple bounding boxes or via some other means of collision detection?
It would seem that if not through bounding boxes then potentially through some complex dance of objects with unique bounding boxes to produce the desired effect. This idea just smacks of being overcomplex and probably the wrong route.
Sorry if this was answered elsewhere, I tried to search for the answer best I could prior to posting.
Any thoughts?
