Particle Effects best practices.

This is a simple question.
If I want to create a particle effect, say an explosion.
Do I need to create the emitter for that explosion and then schedule it for a delete? Or is there an option so that it will remove itself when it has finished playing?
Are there callbacks on particle emmiters?
