framerate problem

Right in the middle of working on a map for RW my harddrive died. When I took it in I had the tech guys upgrade my OS from Windows 98 SE to 2000 Pro. The first thing I noticed when firing up Rw was the framerate dropped. Where before the animations ran smooth and framerate was great they're now choppy like its running at half speed.
I've updated my card's driver and went so far as to delete some unused programs to free up memory but still the problem persists. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

First of all Win2k is meant as a replacement for Windows NT not as a home OS. Historicly Microsoft server OSes have had terrible perofmance when it come to games.
Secondly, make sure you have all of your hardware acceleration turned on. Since fancy 3D graphics aren't needed by servers chances are they've been disabled by default to reduce the risk of a video driver crashing the OS.

Yeah, I asked for Windows 2000 and the tech guys gave me 2000 Pro. Of course I didn't know what the difference was other than it being an upgrade from 98 SE. Thanks for these suggestions.N.R.

2000 Pro is not officially a server OS, it is intended for workstations. I know from using it for years that you can get good gaming performance with it. Haven't compared it to XP head to head though.

When XP first came out I did a series of benchmarks between 98se, XP, and 2000. When I got the latest drivers from the manufacturer, NOT the drivers from MS which are oriented towards stability instead of performance in the NT series, XP and 2000 surprisingly dominated 98se (sometimes by default because 98se would crash often), and 2000 and XP came out about even (sometimes one would be a little bit higher, sometimes the other would). The NT series may have been designed as a business OS, but with proper tuning NT OSes can be a fast, stable gaming platform.

Windows 2000 doesn't ship with DirectX installed. Make sure you download & install DirectX for Win2K (which is slightly different than DirectX for other platforms).

Can anyone tell me where I can get fine-tuning techniques for Windows 2000?

Ahhh, yes. Excellent! I downloaded and installed DirectX 9. This put me back to smooth animations. Thanks all for your help. The game still drops a frame once and awhile though. Can anyone tell me where I can get fine-tuning techniques for Windows 2000?
