Demos of my musical creation ...

by Jiri Kafka · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 05/18/2003 (3:28 pm) · 63 replies

I've just realized that the name of the topic "My music example" is gramatically very poor (and you didnt give me even the smallest notice >P), so I've created new thread with proper and actualized name ...

To link this new thread to the old one, I removed the last reply here:

As I stated in another thread, I've stopped to produce new songs and started research oriented on which instruments sounds good together etc. - the goal is to find out how to create rich and orchestral sounding music.

In case you are interested, here is the first, cagey example of that research:
vault.bonusweb.cz/Miser/research_1.mp3

instruments used: violins, viola, cello, bassoon, oboe and french horn

I've been thinking more about your orchestration quest and asked some of the professors around here and they suggested this ltitle tid biddy of info: Some of the more prominent classical composers (Mozart, Beethoven, etc) took a score that they liked by another composer and copied it out again to find out why they liked it.

Basically by disecting the score you found out why a certain part sounds so cool and what all the composer is really doing there that you might not think about when you hear it.

So I went home and tried it, wrote out a Berlioz score and found the things that made me like it. Then I totally ripped him off and started adding some of his techniques to my compositions the same day :)

So this is a very effective method (at least for me). I'd suggest a study score of some great classical piece. That should save a lot of money, I think these scores are like $10 each.

Anyway that's my crazy attempt to help the orchestration question. All I can say is Euphonium sounds good with everything :)

thanks for the idea ben ... I know that this is the way to go, but I am not able to get those scores .. I wanted to buy some months ago over the internet, but although they are cheap, postal fees are wayyy to high for me ..

I was also looking for some MIDI files, but they were usually very poor quality.

So ...

Hey Jiri

http://www.sheetmusicarchive.net/

You can find a lot of famous classical scores in PDF (Acrobat) format. The only downside is they limit you to two downloads per day unless you pay some price or something. The scores are good though.

For midi files:

http://www.classicalarchives.com/

This has tons of midi files of good quality (for being general midi at least). They have two or three files of all the major pieces and at least one of just about every classical piece known to man.

Trombone is the lead instrument, later on there are some french horns used.

I am really glad you like it! :)

Nice, sounds like good bad guy music at the part of the film where's he's revealing his evil plot! Muahahaahhahah.

Being a low brass player, that trombone sounds damn good for a synth

Thx Benjamin. I used Dan Dean's Trombone (gig format).

And now for something completely different:
http://vault.bonusweb.cz/Miser/clarinet.mp3

I've just downloaded Dan Dean's Clarinet, so I made some improvization :) .. don't expect orchestration tho, its just a melody ;)

Jiri ..

I think you should filter some of the sounds, your mix is very bright. In an orchestral hall the rear instruments will have a different reverb, and will be more muted.

Perhaps you may want to layer the reverb into 3 sections for the front instruments being brightest and the rear instruments being more dull.

Jiri,

You just downloaded Dan Dean's clarinet? I wasn't aware these could be received electronically. Where did you buy it?

just curious,
Matt
