DDS and JPG Not usable in T3D Mat Ed.
by Mike D · in Torque 3D Professional · 12/09/2009 (4:53 pm) · 22 replies
I can not seem to get any of my many thousands of DDS and Jpg textures to show up
in the material editor, it will not allow the use of any of them.
T3D does not even issue an ERROR or anything helpful for the user to know what is
wrong. (HINT-To the Dev's, This is in more than one area.)
Could someone shed some light on this issue?
Thanks.

I have even tried some PIC's of non Pwr2 that were like bmp and jpg in my pic's folder and they work for some reason. But none of the many
textures that worked prior to 1.1 work now I cant even paint terrain
with them like I used to.

You do have the "updated" 1.1alpha download don't you? First one they put up was the wrong build.

When I would assign textures to to the material it would show up blank in the Material Editor. For the time being I converted them to .png format as temporary work around.
I however do remember reading a separate forum about proper .dds export choices in the photoshop and gimp dds exporter plugins.
Sorry I could not find the link to post, if I do I'll post it.

I'd check your PC.

Check my pc? , Lets see Unity will save, UKD will save but when it comes to T3D I need to check my PC? How interesting.

I'd also check that the directory T3D is reading/writing (or not as the case maybe) to is the correct version of T3D and not one of the older versions - which bizarrely happened to me once and I was sure it wasn't my mess up.
I'd also check that you're including .mis at the end of a new save name, as this has been an issue since TGEA.

Yep, I'd check Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> Local -> Error for things like IAstor timeouts, and then My Computer -> rightclick C: (or other main drive) -> tools -> Error Checking -> Check Now -> schedule -> restart, to see if anything is up with the MBFT, orphaned files, etc.I'd also check that the directory T3D is reading/writing (or not as the case maybe) to is the correct version of T3D and not one of the older versions - which bizarrely happened to me once and I was sure it wasn't my mess up.

Steve you would not know how to get the DDS or Jpg issue fixed would you?

That's been an issue since some betas - they I think it might have been fixed in one and then crept back in ... not sure.
Another long running issue is Gideon moveing sideways (strafing) whilst auto firing the rocket launcher causes a crash related to impact decals, but only with Gideon and the rocket launcher, my custom stuff which basically does the same thing doesn't crash (though I've not ported all my stuff to 1.1a yet), just been playing with the new editors.
No idea about your DDS troubles though. Try exporting a pre-textured model, select it, and then try adding the texture. Also try writing a material.cs manually with the correct texture loactions.
And disk check every so often - especially if you've got Dell's Samsung HDs, I swear that they are dodgy. Which reminds me, I shoulda bought some new Seagates or something when I was Xmas shopping today ...

Just to confirm however, what settings are you using to save your DDS files, what software and converter are you using?
could you upload a couple of these problem files so that others can check?
Theres a possibility i guess that some errant setting or custom code has caused some disruption, but ive used my DDS files in both 1.0.1 and 1.1a with no problems, all files are DXT3 btw

My DDS files are working just fine, jpgs are evil anyway and nvidia should add funtionality to their drivers to verbally abuse anybody who uses such things.Just to confirm however, what settings are you using to save your DDS files, what software and converter are you using?

network drive. T3D for some stupid reason has to have you COPY them into the T3D Dir structure before it will work with them which is
CRAZY how user friendly.

Found out what it was, I was trying to pull my textures from a sharednetwork drive. T3D for some stupid reason has to have you COPY them into the T3D Dir structure before it will work with them which is
CRAZY how user friendly.
