What is the function of Layers in the Torque3D Material Editor?

Can anyone tell me what the function of Layers are in the Torque3D Material Editor?
The popup description reads: "Changes the material layer being edited"

I haven't found any detailed documentation about the Material Editor Layers function specifically and playing around with it I could not figure out how it could be useful.

Possible examples of how it could be useful:
Layers would imply that each material can have different layers of assigned textures to toggle through?
This is useful for swapping in out texture sets for quick facelifts on the level and providing variation.

Can more than one layer be active and viewable at the same time?
If so are there blending options to use more than one layer at the same time?

Thanks!

This is a very good question and seems odd that it has not had any takers yet.
This public T3D area seems to not get much traffic possibly from those in the know(no).

Quoted - but tags are playing up.

Its just for creating a more fancy material.

Like you could put a scrolling glowing texture on layer 0 and a alpha cutout material over it which partially obscures the first layer.

yeah, it's very basic right now. However, I/we're hoping for huge changes within the year.

I was not aware you could do that. Thanks for the tip.

Tip from Tom Spilman - but the interwebz were playing up when I was trying to use tags yesterday.

Thanks all for the info and thanks Steve for that link to Spilman's video, very cool and helpful.
