Porting tge game and question

by Alexander B · in Torque 3D Beginner · 12/02/2009 (6:08 pm) · 16 replies

How hard would porting be? I have missions done, player model done, weapon done. Pretty much everything done. I have downloaded the torque 3d demo however I can't really use the tge mission because all the file paths are wrong. Is there any easy fix for this and how hard would the rest of the port be?

Also if I were to get a compiled exe from lets say GMK could I replace it with the normal exe? Bassicly what i am asking is if I get a compiled exe can i use that and not the exe it comes with. I am talking about the binary version of course as I am thinking about getting it but I need to have GMK in it.

Thanks for starting a new thread for this.

Torque 3D has gone through quite a few changes in it's evolution from TGE to TGEA to T3D. The directory structure is one of the things that saw changes each time. To fix the filepaths you'll have to change the necessary paths in the scripts.

Beyond accounting for changes to the directories other things you'll need to watch out for would be some changed TorqueScript functions and stuff like different lighting effects. Other than those things general game logic should copy and paste almost seamlessly.

Ok thankyou for your answer. Guess i will be spending the day changing file paths hehe. If that is the case then I think that it will not take long to port over and it will be well worth it.

Also do you know the answer to my second question as I really need to be able to have GMK otherwise there is no point in even attempting to port over.

Do you own GMK?

If you own it and the person who would compile it owns it, then it shouldn't be a problem for you to use a compiled exe.

Yeah i do, however thats basicaly a sneaky way around getting past not being able to get the source code?

It's not sneaky at all, it's just a way to use it. If you own the product it's yours to use, you just don't own the source so you can't compile it cause you don't have T3D source access.

My friend has source code access tho so if he compiles exe's for me i can use them, correct?

Yes, as long as you rightfully own the product he compiles in and own the binary. Or if it's a free resource that a community member has posted. I understand your skepticism, it's kinda hard to decypher.

Edit: I also believe your friend with source access needs to own the products as well.

Well what I was thinking is. My friend owns the full engine (source code and everything) and if he just compiles the exe's for me then there is almsot no point in paying another $900. I would like an official post from someone from GG but thanks heaps for your replys.

Alexander, in order to use the torque 3d exe, you would have to own torque 3d. (eather artist or pro) If you own the artist version, and you own gmk for torque 3d, and your friend compiles the exec for you with a free resource, you can use the exe. If you have the demo exe, and your friend owns the pro version, it isn't legal for you to use his exe. Hope that's clear.

In the release blog for the artists verion, Brett and others talk about this same thought at length. It mas a major topic there.

And just to keep things clear, the official terminology being used by the team is as follows:

Torque 3D: $250 binary version of the engine, with access to all editors, scripting system, and ability to publish.

Torque 3D Professional: $1000, everything the binary offers plus full source code access.

We are not using the terms "artist" or "basic" anymore, since the official products have been released. We don't want new users trying to find an "artist" product in the store. If you own Torque 3D and your friend owns Torque 3D Professional, you can share binaries. Your friend can edit the source code, compile it, and then give you the new binary.

Awesome. Well I will use my friends torque 3d professional then purchase the binary to sell it. Hes on my team so I can do that right? As long as I don't sell it till I buy the binary.

@Alexander - Not quite. For you to work with Torque 3D, you need to own a license for the binary or professional. If you both want to work with Torque 3D, you each need a license to one or the other.

I wouldn't wait that long to get the binary even if that was a possibility, you probably won't see the $100 price again.
