Christian Gaming/Reviewing

by Cheryl Gress · in General Discussion · 05/12/2003 (4:45 pm) · 44 replies

Hello,

My name is Cheryl Gress and I run Christian Computer Game Reviews http://www.ccgr.org we review games from a Christian perpesctive and mention things that the ESRB doesn't. Even though we mention things in games that we don't agree with, we also praise games for what they do right. If oyu ahve any questions or comments I'm interested in them.

Cheryl

You know... I had a nice "retort" for this post that seemed to be spam'ish. But, I went to your site. You guys seem to be fair and objective in your reviews. I understand that since it is a Christian site you must add to the criteria for grading. The "Christian Factor" is ok. I don't use such things for when I look at a game for myself. However, when kids in my family ask for such things I look closely at the content. More times than not the males want things that I will substitute stuffed animals with for making such an assumption that "Jim will get it for me...he's cool!". So instead of pointing out (too many times), that one well placed thread in these forums will do to get your message out, I'll just say, "welcome".

My only question is what would your rating be for Doom? ;)

I read the page 'What you need to do to be saved' on that site under the Christianity heading.

The page is a good idea, but it seems kind of long and complicated. Any chance for an easy checklist of things I need to do to be saved? You know, maybe the top 3 things, something like that? That would be cool, thanks.

1) Accept that you are a sinner and can't earn your way to heaven by just being good enough.

2) Realize that Christ died to take the penalty (eternal damnation) for your sins if you will believe that He is the only way to be saved and you make Him your Lord.

3) Ask Christ into your heart and life as Lord and Savior.

4) Live your life seeking to obey Him, repenting of your sins when you fall short (which will be very often). The two major ways to know how to obey Him is through prayer and reading the Bible. You will not suddenly become perfect and your life will very likely get harder but you will have an eternal reward.

Ugggghhhh.

That is all I have to say on the issue.

I took a look at the site and felt that it is fair. Usually religious sites tend to be a little right wing. The review of Return to Castle Wolfenstein did not agree with some of the content but did not bash the game because of it. Basically saying this game isn't for kids.

Noone MADE you read the thread Ben. Show a little respect for the views of others why don't you?

George, Matthew has done a pretty good job of outlining it, but I feel the need to point out that salvation is a matter of the heart. Just trying to impress that there isn't a 1-2-3 you're saved formula, per se', but that this must be something done out of sincerity, and God knows if you are or aren't. ;)

Oh, I agree Kirby =) I just wanted to provide the "checklist" George asked for. I realize that religion is dangerous ground for a forum and I hope that we can all be mature and reasonable.

Neat site, was a bit of fun to go through and read the reviews for most of the games I play. I noticed a few typos in the reviews, but less than you get in your average "I've got a game idea" posts round here ;)

The "Hit List" made me wince a little, sounds a little too arrogant for what you're trying to do there, maybe rename it to something less provocative. ("Game Warnings" or something similar?)

I also think the "What you must do to be saved" page is a little hard to read. Having the quotes in a different colour, font or size to the explanations would help.

Finally, a list of things that game designers could avoid to help their game get a higher rating from you would, imho, be helpful to your cause. :)

Ummmmm, do you know the meaning of the word "hypocrite"? Likewise, no one MADE you read my post. Show a little respect for my right to have an opinion why don't you?

hmm the notify didn't seem to work sorry about the delayed response.

Thanks all for checking out the site, I don't mean to spam I was introducing myself.

It's been a while since I played the original Doom so I don't recall what symbols it had in it if any at all. Hellish monstor and violence is a given.

I don't mean to sound arrogant, I just have a line I draw with my games and I don't expect everyone to agree with me on them. I try to remain neutral in the reviewing game and praising them on what they do right as well as objectionally wrong.

Typos? most likely..please point them out....200+ pages is hard for me to find. :)

Good idea on the different quote colors on the saved page I will implment that.

How to score good on CCGR
-fully clothe females (and males but that's rare) ex. no G-strings
-option to turn off gore and swearing
-please don't put occult symbols in the games to make them look evil
-mutliplayer...with bots!

The only spelling error I remember off the top of my head is from the Starcraft Broodwars review - Last line before the ratings used 'their' instead of 'there'.

Ah, loaded the page up now.... (http://www.ccgr.org/brood.htm)

It does have some swearing, and of course the it is war, so their is blood and violence. (bits that don't fit for me are in bold)

As fer listing all of em... I'm not yer editor ;)

Thanks for pointing that out..usually Frontpage catches them all (but not grammar). My hubby is my editor but I didn't write that review. Thanks again for taking the time to point it out.

What about a review of the bible, are there any symbolic references to hell / prostitution and gratuitous deity violence we shouldn't see? ;)

yeah the Bible can be rated PG-13 at times but no different than other religious book..other than being historically proven.

Ok folks. I'm about as anti organized religion as one can get but ya'll need to back the heck off this guy. Grow up and show a little RESPECT for other people, and their beliefs.

Cheryl,

I think what you're trying to do is admirable. What I've seen of your site, admittedly not a whole lot, seems fair and honest. While I don't share your particular belief structure I'll make sure I mention your site to those I know who do.

No different from other religious books. Gotcha. If he'd just given Eve a bit more armour.

On a more serious note, I'm sure your site will be a useful reference for kids purchasing games. You should be kept busy - this years games nearly all have physics.

Why does everyone think I'm a guy? shouldn't Cheryl be a dead give away? (hence why I don't like naked chicks in my games) ;) Thanks all for giving the site a fair shake...I didn't come here to say you're all going ot hell or anything like that. But I will be mroe than happy to give your games a look if anyone is interested e-mail me. ccgr@ccgr.org

@J. Donavan, I make joke. You don't like the joke, so you critisise it, fair enough.

But ask yourself whether your lack of religious conviction is the reason for your unwarranted anger and knee jerk response?

Unlike you, I have read the site and found lots of judgemental and critical comments - some I agree with, and some I didn't. I'm sure no site or author is beyond critisism, whether they write what they believe or not.
