Graveyard of dead projects

by DME · in General Discussion · 05/08/2003 (3:19 pm) · 256 replies

I was wondering what happens to people once they do a bunch of work for a project and then it dies.. Do the people just take their work and go to another project?

Reason I ask is because I'm currently working on level design using worldcraft. It has come to my attention that there has to be billions of levels already out there that no one ever uses.

If I take a completed level add my own textures and change it to suit my game is that copy write infrigment. Cause I started with a level then edited it?
If it is does anyone have levels kickin around that they are not using?

I'm willing to donate my City Starter Pack to the cause, but it's 11.6 MB and I believe that's larger than what the site allows.

Content includes:
20 unique buildings (likely including a sunken concrete park), some with pipes, electrical boxes, or air conditioning units on top
24 total 2-lane, 4-lane, 3-way and 4-way street pieces
3 rooftop ramps; 1 with a door graphic, 1 fan, and 1 vent
1 rooftop water tower
Several various metal stairways, which allows for tall ones to be built on building backs
1 asphalt terrain texture for parking lots and alleys
All QuArK (and/or MAP) files

Just looked at this site for the first time - looks really good!

One issue I noticed is that it isn't clear what license these works are being released under until you try to create a new account. Then there is a license link that takes you to the Creative Commons Attribution 1.0 license - all well and good, but anyone downloading these resources and (possibly) using them in a game would need to know that they should comply with the rights/restrictions in that license.

Creative commons has scripts to help set up a web logo that links directly to a description of the license on their site - simply placing one of these logos somewhere on the page would be enough.

Also I note that the current version of the Creative Commons Attribution license appears to be version 2.5. I don't know if there is a reason to link to version 1.0, but you might want to consider the new version.

Thanks for the great resource! I may have to dig around and see if I have any old stuff to contribute...

Again regarding Creative Commons...

I think it's important for people who are posting content to digitalboneyard to realize that they are required to release their content under the Creative Commons Attribution license - simply having the link on the web site may not be enough.

I would suggest requiring an explicit grant in the readme.txt file (or similar) of each resource.

For example, the excellent "Spaceship" vehicle posted by Djaggernaut contains the following in its readme file:

--------------------------
You can use this model for what you want including commercial games/projects.
You can't modify it in any way you want: only skin can be changed.
Feel Free to send me an email if you use it.
--------------------------

While this may seem more than reasonable to Djaggernaut, it is not compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution license, which requires that derivative works be allowed (e.g., modifying the model). Creative Commons allows Djaggernaut to request that his name be taken off the work if it is changed, but it doesn't allow him to prevent changes.

I would suggest placing something like this in the readme instead:

--------------------------
This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/ or send a letter to Creative Commons, 543 Howard Street, 5th Floor, San Francisco, California, 94105, USA.
--------------------------

(text from creativecommons.org)

I know this may sound limiting, but if everyone who posts to the site were to do this, it would go a long way toward making the files really useful to others.

At the time I uploaded those models, I may have cared about not having the models changed, but now it wouldn't be a problem. Christian, you can change the readme if you want ;)

Hey, please change the city starter pack author's name to mine. I think I'm registered there as "eforhan". Or, Eric Forhan would do nicely. :)

License is included in the pack.

Good luck with digital boneyard!

I think I'll upload a screenshot of the current progress of the new design on the next weekend.

A few more submissions wouldn't be bad... so many people are saying that there are too less resources, if everybody of them would submit something... the site would definantly grow much faster.

I came across this and thought it could use a bump. If this takes off it could help out new developers a lot.

Unfortunately, this hasn't really taken off yet. It's had a few incarnations in the past 3 years, but none of which really stuck around. There were a few enthusiastic people who submitted their work, and the sites grew quickly at first and then the sites died as well :[ It would be a helpful resource though, I agree.

Maybe the site should be an all-around free asset site, rather than just dead projects. I think that would draw more attention.

Cool idea. Had a related idea a couple of years back -- 'Texture Mission'. The idea was to get a network of folks that would take 'missions' to gather photos of textures and post them to the site. Based on a trust / score metric, those that contribute and respond with good stuff get good ratings. This could work for references as well. That way if you'd like to get a close up picture of some spot in San Fran, Wash D.C., London, Siberia... You don't have to be there to get it:) You issue a mission and hope someone fills it. Fun for everyone, I'm guessing. I would dig doing someone a favor and getting some fresh air at the same time.
