Graveyard of dead projects
by DME · in General Discussion · 05/08/2003 (3:19 pm) · 256 replies
I was wondering what happens to people once they do a bunch of work for a project and then it dies.. Do the people just take their work and go to another project?
Reason I ask is because I'm currently working on level design using worldcraft. It has come to my attention that there has to be billions of levels already out there that no one ever uses.
If I take a completed level add my own textures and change it to suit my game is that copy write infrigment. Cause I started with a level then edited it?
If it is does anyone have levels kickin around that they are not using?

So I figured it was defunct now.
If not, I guess I'll submit my stuff. I was thinking about setting up a free downloads page on my own site because I thought Digital Boneyard was dead.
Once I get my new computer (probably in January), I'll start taking digital pictures of stuff. Then artists can make those images into art. I can't do it now because I fried the USB port on this computer. :(
Alas, even though the cord was attached to anything, yanking it out of the computer when it was turned on fried the port. That's what I get for being an idiot.
I'll go sign up for Digital Boneyard and see what happens.

Does Digital Boneyard even work? I was thinking about submitting a couple of things I had lying around (not particularly good stuff, but stuff), but Digital Boneyard had the same stuff posted as it always had.So I figured it was defunct now.

Still, if people want to submit resources, go ahead, it all works. They will be held for approval, but as soon as someone notices they will be approved. Posting here or emailing Matt F or I is probably a good way to speed that up.

The site works. Things havent been added since nobody has submitted them. Since everyone involved with it is really busy on their actual work projects nobody's had any time to do anything with the site. That doesnt look like it's going to change at any time soon.Still, if people want to submit resources, go ahead, it all works. It won't be anything spectacular though, so there's no reason to hurry to check it. I'll submit a few things every once and a while, and whenever someone gets to it is fine.

Cool :) Doesnt matter how spectacular, the whole point to it is as a place to put assets that are no longer being worked on but may be useful to someone to either finish or use as is.T.

this is great, and hopefully it will get some publicity!

Very nice work everyone, you took a simple idea, and turned it into something real!! doesnt happen often!! sorry its a bit late of a response, but I havent had time to respond. Anyway, I've got some dead projects, each associated with plenty of dead art, Ill probably be uploading some stuff soon. My latest project isnt dead, but there are plenty of discarded models I have, so those will be good candidates!this is great, and hopefully it will get some publicity!

I agree. This definately had potential to be the thread with the most posts to it.

It needs to be pumped more, methinks. Pump it! Pump it! If the orphanage could pull it off (http://marathon.bungie.org/orphanage/) then we can.

If anyone wants to contribute some nice skyscrapers or a cityscape skybox from a dead project, I wouldn't mind at all...

I love this idea, I've got a few things I could submit too I think. Gonna put a link on my site.If anyone wants to contribute some nice skyscrapers or a cityscape skybox from a dead project, I wouldn't mind at all...

When I eventually get TGE and TSE, possibly T2D, I am sure I am going to have "test assets" that I can contribute to this graveyard idea that I will make for nothing more than the express purpose of making something to try it out in the engine(s). Not sure what it is going to be and if anyone is going to actually want anything I come up with, but sort as a "I'll contribute in the future" post.

Is www.digitalboneyard.com now dead too? this does seem like a cool idea. maybe it should be implemented in wiki form so that it wont die due to lack of admins

This is a great idea.. it is a shame that it isn't being used more or the word isn't being spread, as I imagine there is sooo much resources and unused game content out there that you could probably make a full game out of it and then some
