Multiplayer FPS: Is a lobby useful?

Is a lobby in a multiplayer FPS useful? What do you think?
My opinion is "yes" because it is a lot of fun to chat with teammates and competitors.
If you say "yes... a lobby is great" which functions would you like to have?

i think lobbies are alright depending on how the game is set..if it is a fast action game a lobby is good between matches like call of duty uses it. I personally see lobbies as a must if you have a friends system in your game..so it can be easy to connect with them and chat like xbl voice chat or so..you get the idea :)

If the game is designed where all players should be ready, and teamwork and balanced teams are critical, there should be a lobby. More strategic, team-oriented shooters use this. Edit: Oh and for functions, a way to see the players you are with, a chat interface, and a list of current game rules are critical in my opinion.
If it is a fast action twitch-shooter, a lobby may not really be necessary. Games that focus around deathmatch, or instant respawning should get into the action fast. People want to get in and go, and being 1 person short isn't really that bad.

Why?:
Because, if its FPS I like to jump into the action. I wouldn't want to sit there and wait untill everyone "Greens up". Like in Left 4 Dead
