Demos performance

Hi all,
I downloaded T3D demos and was very surprised with incredibly low framerate. On Athlon 4,8 Ghz, 2 Gb Ram, Nvidia 9600 1 GB machine demos run about 5-10 fps, if advanced options such as SSAO are turned on. There are alot of graphic glitches too, but that is different matter. Yeah I know, my machine is not newest (I am goin replace it soon), but it must be quite sufficient to run engine demos. So what is the problem, engine optimisation or some other things?

My first instinct is your video card. Nvidia is known for gimping the mid range and lower cards of each series, so the more advanced features may not run as well on them.

For comparison, my office machine is an Intel dual core with 2GB RAM and an 8800GT 512MB and my home machine is one of the earlier AMD dual cores with 4GB RAM and a 9800GTX 512MB. Both machines have been able to run with full AL settings turned on without a problem. I can't say if the single vs dual core is an issue at all, the only single core machine I have is my netbook.

switch to basic lighting, advanced lighting only runs well with decent frame rates on higher end cards...and dont be fooled by the term "basic" because there really isnt anything basic about it but you just dont have use of some of the higher end effects which your card cant handle anyway hence the graphic glitches you are probably seeing. AL requires at least a SM 3.0 graphic card for any real performance.
