Dynamics in terrain editior for trees and foliage?

by Adam Zeliasz · in Torque 3D Beginner · 10/01/2009 (2:41 pm) · 10 replies

I'm debating between Unity and Torque 3D. In Unity they have dynamic properties for foliage and trees; such as bending and swaying with the wind. Does Torque 3D have those features as well built-in? I've seen that in videos, but I wasn't sure how easy it would be to implement from an artist standpoint like it is in Unity.

Thanks!

Yes Torque has moving foilage. It's in the environment panel, its called a foilage replicator in the demo. Im not being biased when I say this, Unity3D's art pipeline sucks hard compared to T3D IMO. After 30 days of Unity, as an artist I noticed it lacks environmental effects. Unity doesnt have animated clouds (no solid community releases either), lightrays, night and day cycle(community release is very poor) HDR, depth of field, SSAO (theres a community release), river and road tools , plus it lacks source code. All these things are in T3d , dont have to wait for a community release since you are an artist. The lighting isn't that good either. As an artist your going to get a much more beautiful enviroments with the stock T3D package. Torque has a lot similar features to the CryEngine and Unreal engine when it comes to creation pipeline. I can't speak on Unity's coding side, but there is no source code so I would expect limits to present themselves.

Thanks for the quick replies. I didn't get that far into the foliage replicator, but I'll be sure to test it out.

And I agree, Unity has very limited "out of the box" capabilities compared with T3D. I just wanted to make sure that some of the important features that I'm looking for are in Torque.

Thanks again!

most of what you see in those T3D videos are all available with little tweaks found in the private forum.

How about the assets such as trees/foliage/etc. found in the South Pacific demo. Will those be available to use, royalty free? I'm trying to get a good idea of what comes with the purchase.

There is a bit more info on this in the Torque 3d release blog. Brett said they plan to release all this stuff in the 1.x releases which will be free to owners. Checkout that blog for more info.

The tree effects and models seen in the South Pacific Demo are from the Forest Pack being produced by Sickhead games, it is scheduled to release about the same time as T3D 1.1 and is an additional add on purchase.... The actual Forest Pack cost has not been released to the public,

Thanks. Any ideas on when the 1.1 release will happen?

It has been indicated that 1.1 should be released anywhere from 1 to 6 months, it is currently in active development, though there may also be a 1.0.1 release soon that will hot fix a few major bugs currently in 1.0

Im playing around with the FoliageReplicator. Under Media I'm selecting TallGrass.png in the groundCover folder. All that appears are gray squares, like they're not showing the image file. Any thoughts on this?

Also, how can I use the replicator to place mass tress, with swaying?

Thanks
