few questions about Torque

Hi guys,
I'm so excited to start creating games after learning OpenGL(3.1)
Before I purchase, I want to know a few things about the Torque game engines:
1. Is it possible to create 2D games using Torque3D ? (extra hard-coding is no problem for me as I'm C++ and Java programmer)
2. As it's describing that the new Torque3D is coming, but will not be available for indie developer until 1.0 comes out, so, should I wait until its time or purchase TGEA and play around with it first ? Can I get discount as an indie developer to purchase the upcoming version if I bought this TGEA version ? The TGEA price is $295 and the ads says $350 off for existing TGEA customers. That's why a little bit confused for me.
3. Which product should I purchase ? I've found no where sections like FAQ on this website and so, just want to get advice from you, guys. For the game type I want to create, atm I have no idea, I just want to implement what I've been learning in Computer Graphics and I want to learn from the real-world commercial products by comparing with my own game engine (just pure OpenGL codes, better say own graphics engine). So, I'll choose what it seen to be easiest for me to start off, fps, side-scrolling games, puzzles, or rts, really no idea !
Thanks in advance
P.S. forgive about my English
