Upgrade path?

Sorry if this has been asked before...
I am interested in making a game, but want to approach it in baby steps. Ultimately I would hope that I would end up with the Studio version of T3D. At minimum I would like the Professional (gotta have the code, you know :) But its kinda hard to convince the wife to spend $1000 on what she considers may be a passing fad.
Is it possible to buy a license for TGEA and a few art packs to play around with to put together a proof-of-concept and then "upgrade" to T3D Professional by paying the difference in price? And if I ever make above $250K then upgrade to Studio?
Are the engines even backwards compatible? Or do levels need to be redesigned in T3D from TGEA?
Basically what I want to do is have an engine and decent looking placeholder graphics for my son and I to make a demo to show people that what we want to do is quite possible. What's your recommendation?

Scripts I'm not so concerned about, since I'm a professional computer programmer. I'm not much of an artist, but if I have the appropriate "filler" graphics I can put together a pretty decent level to attract the right people to do the hard work of graphics design.
Seeing some of the artpacks that are available, I am sure that is well within reach.

T3D also supports Collada, so if you can't find DTS, you normally can find at least some in that format. Also check out TrueBones for animations, and the various new products in the GG store for changing those animations :)

The Studio version is only for big companies, so individuals don't usually need it. It does allow a transferrable licence, though, which means you could pass it on.
I'm not sure how compatible levels are, but with the neat tools added in T3D, you might want to redesign them anyway. An actual T3D user can answer that :)
