Portfolio Game

Hey, all.
I'm a reasonably fresh developer, and I've been toying with the idea of a "portfolio game" because while I have a website, I'm finding more and more that that just isn't cutting it for displaying my true abilities (besides, I'm not the greatest at web design, and if you know of a game engine that scripts with JavaScript, well, let me know, ok?)
What I'd like to know is if anyone else uses this approach, and if you do, what are some pros and cons you've ran into with it?
