Link/ Banner exchange?

by Kirby Webber · in General Discussion · 04/04/2003 (1:44 pm) · 28 replies

Is there a link or banner exchange program for GarageGames developers?

If not, there should be! It'd be an excellent way for us indies to help drive traffic to one another's sites, as well as increase awareness of the community and the developers and projects involved!

Just a thought... has it been done allready? If so, where do I sign up?

Sorry Jay, it's been a busy few days for me. ;-)

Actually, what you have outlined sounds perfect. I (personally) have nothing (at the moment) to add or detract.

I have been thinking about cycle time however, and am trying to come up with something viable. So far, the only thing I can think of that would work unilateraly would be to put a time limit on it, say 3 months or so.

This would prompt those who wanted to continue participation to create new banners (part of the criteria for re-submittal?) and would also weed out the dead projects rather quickly. I suspect noone's going to put that much effort into a project that they've abandoned. ;-)

The drawback here, is that it would require ongoing maintenance for whoever decided to take on the upkeep of the listing. Sure alot could be automated through code/ script, but there'd still be some "manual" effort needed to make sure it all went smoothly.

Just "thinking out loud" a little bit.

Well if someone would like to send me a banner (gmicek@diygames.com) I'll be happy to post it on DIY Games.com. The requirements are that it has to look halfway decent, and be for a game that is either A: highly original in concept and design, or B: already released or close to being released. If I get a lot of them I'll rotate them from time to time so I don't have more than 7-10 banner ads at a time.

Can't say that you'll get a flood of traffic, but every little bit helps. And we're not asking that you link us on your site, just looking to help out.

Oh yeah, a little tip. You'll notice we only have one one cascading banner (sky skraper) at the moment. Take that as you will :)

Jay... I just wanted to touch base and verify that I did indeed email you. I seem to remember doing it, but things have been hectic lately so it may be a figment of my imagination. ;-)

Let me know when you get a chance. (C:

Gregory - Thank you for your offer, sounds like a great opportunity and I'll get you banners of what I have ASAP.

Kirby - Yes, I've got it scheduled for discussion with James for next week and will get the specifics outlined for submitting and admin on the project written into an FAQ. GDSE is now hosted on HomeLAN (so we've been doing some transition work).

You da man!

Again, I know you guys stay pretty busy so I (for one) am really appreciative of your efforts on this.

Cheers!

Sounds like a good idea.

It would be nice if a game with a major milestone completed could take presedence(public beta test, demo, release). Then have a featured game on the main gg page. Right now I don't even look at the main page because to me it's stale (primarily because I visit this site 3 times a day :) ), but with a featured game on I'd stop to see if that game sounded interesting ( I still check news articles btw, I just don't 'see' the banners at the top).

My priority would go to quality of the link rather then fairness to all. I'm not saying that one or two companies ads should be posted constantly because they are the biggest and have the most draw. I just mean that all of the submissions should be of some interest to the person viewing the site. I think it should be something that impresses you about 25% of the time. That being said a good question for the FAQ would be "Would you visit this site and look around?". I would like it to have some meaning though when my ad gets posted on the main page.

btw I'd be willing to create banners for people. Now if I get flooded by requests it might take a while to get to all of them ;), but I will do my best to help anyone who asks (gregfindlay@hotmail.com). I wouldn't say I'm a top notch graphic designer but I've done some webdesign work and have a decent handle of the software.

I realize that I'm dredging up an old thread here... but I am just wondering what the status is on this.

I ask, because I'm in the middle of a major site overhaul... well, heh, actually building a whole new site.

I've left room in my layout for a scyscraper banner to be displayed, but am wondering if I should just pop in some "placeholders" for the time being? (Considering that I am a ways from implimentation.)
