OEM font license pricing

by Giuseppe Bertone · in General Discussion · 09/07/2009 (6:01 am) · 2 replies

Hi to all,
we started to search for OEM font licenses for our "made with TGB" game but we found very expensive licenses around the web (from $1500 to $3000 for single font to be used in a single game). It's a bit strange to me to spend more for a font then for the game engine...For that price, we are seriously thinking to make the font by ourself, even if it will be very time consuming!

Can you suggest a cheapest way to acquire font licenses? How do you manage font licensing for your game? Do you create your own?

Any comments will be appreciated, many thanks!

What type of license is this ? Is it to include their fonts with your game ?

I believe there are a lot of free fonts out there for you to use but not include the *.ttf with your product which is fine for TGB since TGB will convert the fonts (*.ttf) to *.utf.

Hi Aun,
yes, with OEM font license you could include fonts in the game distribution package. The price is lower if you buy a fixed size bitmap font license (usually you could choose one or two sizes) and higher if you need a complete true type font. Bitmap fonts will be good for us but they still costs really much for a casual game production, and you will must pay that license on a "per game" basis.

There could be some drawbacks using free fonts:

- Free fonts often don't cover many languages. We need for example at least English, French, German, Spanish and Italian support, but we'd like to extend localization even to other languages, ie Eastern European ones, if the game will be appreciated.

- Using a free font is not a garantee we can "really" use that font: what if the author had just copied his font from a commercial font? We should search only through fonts with "creative commons" or similar license.

Meanwhile we think about buying oem license, we are searching for free font anyway. I'll let you know if we found a good place to start search from.
