a nother thing that me and my friend have planed is to let people creat there own char. and then they would send it to us and we would change it into 3d and send it back on a cd so they could use there char. in the game. I dont know exactly how we will get that to work but we're going to try it and see if it works.

Of course, that might be hard to do. But it would save both you and the players alot of work later on.

If you want to let them create their own character art, you should make it so they don't have to send it back to you to do it.Of course, that might be hard to do. But it would save both you and the players alot of work later on.

If you've got, say, 4 races, 2 genders, 4 faces, and 3 choices for everything else, there's around 850 possible combinations.
That would be a lot easier than making the character models from scratch, and still allow people to make unique characters.

You should simply allow for a character customization screen that has a ridiculous number of choices: race, gender, height, basic face, weight, hair color, age, facial features (beard styles for males, hair styles for women, piercings, tattoos, scars), body features (body hair, tatoos, scars), armor style. If you've got, say, 4 races, 2 genders, 4 faces, and 3 choices for everything else, there's around 850 possible combinations.

We're trying to make something similar here and after thinking about races, faces and character customization in general we came to the conclusion that being able to customize you character in a lot of different ways is not that important... look at asheron's call 2: character customization offers just a couple of choices but nobody cares about it and it's one of the best mmorpgs around. It would be cool having a lot of different races, or even something like eve online to create your pg, but it's not really worth the effort... once you've created your character you'll soon forget about how cool or how bad the customization screen was.

yes some of that is true but we we're going to have a lot of choice for your char but if you wanted a special char they would send in a pic and we would do are best to turn it from 2D into 3D. So you could chose from normal custom or fully custom.i hoped it would give the game just a little bit more entertianment value.

in this game we're also trying to give your guy/girl jobs to do for money. Like blacksmithing you would be abole to creat weapons for people the higher you are at doing you job the better quality it is and you can build stuff for your self too. Also the better the quality the more you can sell it for.

Are you guys honestly that uncreative? Why not just ask for a concept designer if you seriously need that much help in creating material for your game? There's tons of designers looking for a team to get in with that would be happy to get their feet wet (I should know ;)!
Just a sugestive question :)

And you should have some "magical" race, for instance elves.
And you should have at least one of the following:
a) a fighter race (e.g. dwarf, half-orc)
b) a thief race (e.g. halfling, hobbit, kender)
There should be at least 1 unique race. It can be in one of the above 4 groups, but it should have some sort of special ability or something.
As for classes, I'm sure you'll have at least fighers and wizards, as well as healers (if they're different from wizards). Since you're having skills like blacksmithing, you should have some sort of "peasant" class.
You might want to have thieves, but it depends on what the game's like.
It would be nice to allow people to get abilities that would normally only be allowed to other classes by using character points or something (like in GURPS).
I don't really know of any spells you're unlikely to have thought of already that would be any good.
I don't think I've been too helpful, but I guess that's just the way it is.
Try creating the races/classes you MUST have first, and then look for more if you don't have enough.

Well, you should probably have humans unless it's going to have some special theme, like an RPG where you're a vampire or something. And you should have some "magical" race, for instance elves.

Seriously though... If you want a really good RPG, don't try to emulate others. AC2 does good(well, alright, but I got tired really quickly of it) because it's original. So too with Anarchy Online. Star Wars will do great as well, because that's all original too.
Not that I hate Dwarves, Elves, etc, but doesn't anyone besides me think that it's been done to death and back? You may have some really good gameplay ideas, I don't know, but you could also try to create some original races besides the norm, and throw them into the mix and see what it gives you.
I'm not about to tell you that you're not going to suceed or to give up, but originality is always a good thing, and shaking up the old Dwarve/Elf/Human thing might just be what the doctor ordered.

Here are a few suggestions I would like in an online RPG.
Races are good but they should be limited and balanced.
I like the classic elfs and dwarfs but i'd like to see other races like Orcs, Ogres and Minatours. Then add 3 additional races that are very alien.
As for class, I do not think magic should be limited to 1 race. Variety is something that really goes a long way. In addition, you can create certain magic's for certain races. As always, there should be balance between the classes. Another idea is to create mixed classes. For instance you can create a fighter/mage that can use limited armor and limit his energy. Also, when the fighter/mage cast a spell it takes a toll on his stamina.
I prefer using an energy bases system rather than mana for magic and stamina should be tied into spell casting. As the character increases in level so does the stamina and energy.
Players should be able to customize their character but not to the extent that new models should be introduced. To give a player a variety in the game I would suggest that after the player creates his character he can choose different skins for the clothing (not the appearance of his body features). Allow the play to select 7 different types of clothing. The game should have an option to allow the player to set what 'clothes' their character will wear. For instance on Friday he wears a red shit no hat, Saturday he wears a green shirt with a hat.
I've always wanted to create my own 2D RPG but something always gets in the way. These were some of the ideas that I have that I would like to share. Hope it helps.

Thanx for your input it helped alot and i am trying to program in things like being able to create things like your weapon and how it works but there will be strict rules on how affective it will be. You would not beleive the amount of multi classing in this game and there is going to be some spells that go for some races but most will be for all class. You will be able have your own house where you can have your extra cloths.

this is a great idea, alot like everquest, but with actoual in-game jobs. Sounds nice, but try not to get too close to everquest, nobody here wants to get sued. All I can suggest is a human race.

F**k EQ. They stole quite a bit from my group. They used to list our game as a large influence, but I haven't seen that credit in quite awhile.

Human - normal people with unlimited poteintail
werewolf, - a combination of human and wolf natural hunting abilities with human skills
Vampire - a race of humans that are weak to the sun and asborb the strength of their victims.
classes
Tech - Knowlege is power, they use tchnology and science to get power, they are hackers and creators, they have the talent to see paterns that others don't.
warrior - lives to master their bodie's hidden potential and to refine there skill in armed and unarmed combat.
healer - the masters of first aid and talented at feild surgery and light wounds as well as long term treatment. a complete MASH unit in one person.
mystic - the almost ignored poteintail of magick is their power well, they can manipulate the elements in simple and complex ways their talents include seeing things that can't be seen normally as well as into the minds of others if needs be.
theif - it takes alot of skill to take a simple thing as stealing an object and running, to take it up as an art. to accept every theift as a brand new challenge that must be conqoured, stealth are their freinds and shadows are their allies.
that's just off the top of my head.

Kul Narii anyone? ;)

Sigh, and no mention of psionics, otherwise known as telekenetic powers, yet psionics present a whole new level of combining the imaginative mind with the soul of a character in order to release power based on the creatures fury.Kul Narii anyone? ;)

Keep the number of races and classes to a minimum. Or if there's alot, make sure they're all recognizable (e.g. human, elf, dwarf). Having a bunch of extra ones would just confuse people.
It sounds like you're working on exactly the same sort of game as I just started, so I don't want to give TOO many ideas. We'd end up with 2 of the same game. :)
But, seriously, the best way to get ideas for making RPGs is to play RPGs.
