XBox Support

Im not that familiar with the differences between Windows and Xbox, and was wondering if we built a game using the v12 engine, if it would be a difficult port to XBox?

If someone has already asked about this, Id appreciate it if you just posted the link.

Thanks,
Eric

Not being a programmer, I can only tell you what I know.
I think Xbox is based on windows CE/NT blend using directx8 or so?
Something along those lines.
You will find it should port relativly easy across to Xbox.

From what I've heard, the XBox is based on Windows 2000, using a P3 processor and a modified GeForce 3. It also uses a modified version of DirectX 8, I believe.

What Stephen said is correct.According to MS,it should take you only a day to convert your game from the PC to the XBox.

how much does the X sdk run?
assuming its expensive, can someone persuade them into makeing a deal for indipendant game developers?

you can config your normal PC into a XDK (assume it got some decent hw). there is a XBox developer program for indies which cost virtually nothing.

1st, you need a game idea.

2nd write a proposal send it to MS for evaluate. if they like it. you are on. if not, turn back here, no point to read further.

3rd. you will need to sign some NDA with them, then they will send you some Docs which will tell you how to make your PC into a cheapish XDK platform.

There is another option for indie if you have greater confidence on your game, but will cost some money.

do exactly the same first 2 steps, then sign onto another indie program in MS, which will cost some money for a "proper" XDK. but you will need to find youself a authorized publisher within 6 months. MS may or maynot be interested in publishing your game. GG is not a authorized XBOX publisher (not yet, at lease).

if you can't find a publisher with in 6 month, you will need to contact MS for a renewal on XDK, if you decide to drop the XBOX idea or failing to renew your XDK. all materials will need to return to MS (include all the Docs, the XDK itself (software and hardware), remove all emails etc etc) ***WITHOUT any refund from MS***.

Microsoft actually have a really good incubator program that helps out smaller dev companies wanting to do xbox games. If you have a fairly decent proposal you can apply for the incubator program. I think larger, established companies may need to buy the kits.

some more info on the program

Brendan - thank you very much for that link. I am seriously into the X-Box and have been told by many people that Indie's didn't have much of a chance because MS was being pretty tight about game ideas, etc. These two new programs you referred me too sound much more promising.

There may be light for Indie X-Box developers after all. It makes sense that MS wants to get as many people developing for the platform that they can - it only helps to ensure the success of the machine.

Well MS is setting up alot of deals to get thier developers a wide variety of tools and resources.
things like the Havoc pyhsics kit and Maya and 3dsmax tools.
The netimmerse engine is just another tool they are signing up for xbox. I personally havnt looked at that engine.
You dont need to use those tools though, You could be part of the incubator program and still have the v12 engine.

being that its a platform system it should take alot of the hassel out of building stuff for it.
Im no fan of consoles, but being a ps2 owner has changed some of my opinions.

Its in MS best interest to only see the highest quality product released. but lately the best stuff has been comming from the strangest places.
getting a few GG titles on the X would be a real win I think.
Enough of a score that it probably deserves more attention, maybe? ;)
