Torque X Creators Club 3.0 and Platformer Kit

by Jason LaChapelle · in Torque X 2D · 08/21/2009 (5:21 pm) · 9 replies

Hi,

First off - I apologize if this has been asked before. I searched the forums but didn't find anything.

I'm trying to purchase the Platformer Starter Kit and I keep being told that I must own a copy of Torque X 2D. I own the Creators Club version of TorqueX, which contains the Binaries for TorqueX 2D and 3D, and also TorqueX Builder.

Am I able to purchase this starter kit with my Creators Club version of TorqueX? If so, how can I abouts doing so?

The kit is currently only available to TorqueX 2D customers.

Fair enough. Fortunately, upgrading to TorqueX 2D Pro is on my todo list. Thanks for the reply :)

So basically the platformer kit is an extra $190 due to us having to buy the exact same thing we already own? Pretty lame. Instead of gaining $180 due to this scheme, you're just losing out on the $40 that I would have spent on the kit.

It's not a scheme at all. CC members get a free, binary version of the engine. While there are a lot of things that can be done with the engine, it does not entitle them to receiving the source of the engine for free or any add-ons developed by us or third-parties for free.

As a CC member, you have the binary version of the engine, which is free and which we do not get a penny of your subscription fee for providing. You do not have the source code, which means that the product version that you have is significantly different than your comment indicates.

David, I understand what you are saying - I've bought both the TorqueX 2D and the Platformer starter kit - but I think what Lee is getting at is why can't he simply buy the Platformer starter kit if he has the CC version? You don't need the source for the engine to use the platformer kit right?. He isn't going to pay for the source and the platformer kit, so you guys lose out on the money he would have spent on just the platformer kit.

I was thinking that the 3.0 version required the source version of the engine rather than the binary. I would have to check. It been a while since I have dug deeply into the platformer kit for TX. I've been doing more TGB work.

Lee I aggree and in all honesty torque x is just unfriendly to me. It never does what i tell it to do. Im just going to have to make do without, thats how annoying this engine is. Im glad i didnt pay for it. Someone seriously needs to sort this out, it is a reasonable price for an engine but its like driving a ferrari with a Morris minor engine under the hood

I'm having the same problem. The XNA website says,

"XNA Creators Club Online Premium Members can download Torque X for free."

It really should say,

"XNA Creators Club Online Premium Members can download the extended trial version of Torque X.(extended trial version does not support starter kits or add-on packs)"

Why is it so hard for companies to describe what the customer is actually getting?

I understand that GG isn't making money off of the free CC version of TourqeX. But those customers that XNA has brought over to GG for their 'free' engines will be paying you eventually. Maybe alot. Maybe they will decide to upgrade to TGEA, and Torque3D. Or maybe they'll just want to buy a starter kit or two. Your making money, helping the gaming community and spreading the love for Torque.

After having encountered the same problem as the OP, I'm not feeling the love.

If the free version dosn't support the starter kits and addons, well I guess I can understand that.
But if they do then it's just silly not to let CC members pay you for starter kits. The XNA website leads people to believe that they are getting the full version of TorqueX for becoming a Premium Member.

Any word on weather or not the add on packs and starter kits will work with the CC version of TorqueX?

Honestly guys this was probably a human error. If the Kit will work with the Binary Version of TX2D, then they need to fix the site to allow you to buy it.
