Plan for Craig Fortune

by Craig Fortune · 05/28/2005 (2:52 pm) · 8 comments

Well Over the past several days I've been promising both an update on Snachurz and some rather exciting news, I hope I wont disappoint.

Holy Moly Batman! You managed to get him?!

We've been keeping a little gnome under wraps this past week, hoping no-one will notice. We nicked him from the belt on our last trip to Inqua, he does stuff like this:

This little gnome's name is Benjamin Chavigner, Djagg to you and me. His art kicks some serious ass, we love him :) Its great to have someone like Djagg come onto the team and literally within hours pump out this picture, which in my opinion has instantly captured the core feeling behind Snachurz.

Ok thats cool news number 1 done with. I could go on but a gnome's shoulders can only carry a head of certain size :)

Cool News #2

The second cool bit of news is that Snachurz is moving over to TSE. We've decided that by the time Snachurz is ready for a public outing that most of our target market will have shader technology, even if it is only the lower versions. But shaders are not our main reason for moving over to TSE, its actually that of the terrain. Which, as I write this up I find its out, wahoo :)

Now I know theres probably gonna be quite a few people who think that Snachurz should stay with TGE (I've chatted to one of them who was quite sincere about this, his name begins with P... *mutters profanities @ him* :P) and I dont wish to start some big debate on TSE and its usefulness (or otherwise) to indies. And I dont believe I have much to add only reiterate past statements, but one thing I will say is this: Everyone judges a book by its cover. We like to think we dont; but we do. Who am I to argue with abundant prettiness? I'm an artist after all. :D

Thankyou Guys!

I'd like to say a big thankyou to a lot of the guys in the #gid channel who gave some very nice comments after I gave them a little sneaky peak at a Snachurz model a couple of days back. Its means a lot to have guys (and gals) like you giving such great feedback, its very much appreciated.

So what else am I up to?

Lately has been a rather crazy time to be me, I've been busy with University work (only a week and a bit to go until I've completed the first year of my degree =]) and this coupled with contract work has led to some rather late nights and days of solid working (I now see people purely as polygons and pixels...) Also, trying to do this with an apparent bounty on your head (#gid regulars will understand this, hehe) means I've had a bit of a punishing schedule lately, and it shows no signs of slowing up in a hurry!

Bike Pack

Just a quick bit here to say that the bike pack has not been dropped or anything, its just on the back burner for a while simply because of how busy we all are. The models are done, and UVmapping has started. We dont wish to rush this out for the sake of getting it out. But fear not it'll be done at some point, with code for the bike vehicles too.

Til next time

Craig,

I've always been a big fan of the layout of your site and the general look of the sketches. I think that style would look awesome in a 2d enviroment.

IS there a name for such a style?

Do be more specific, I'm talking more about the whole look of the 2d snachurz images

I wish I could take credit for these images above but as you can see in the text they are Djagg's handiwork.

The Snachurz site was developed by myself and Nauris (whos Snachurz artwork you've probably seen before) Nauris did the artwork, I'm more of a "designer" myself (ie piecing Nauris artwork together into the site for example) My skills mainly lay within the 3d realm, although I love a little dabble in 2d occasionally (ala the Torque 2d Official Demos)

As for Nauris' art style I dont know if there is a name for it, cos quite simply I cant name anyone I know with quite the same style. :) I'll ask him tomorrow to see if he can shed light on it.

I think the move to TSE is fantastic. I totally agree with your judging a book by its cover comment.

One of my favourite games I played was American McGee's Alice. The gameplay was pretty standard, but the art and feel of the worlds was just WOW. I wanted to keep playing just to see what the next area looked like.

Theres plenty of debate about art vs gameplay around (sometimes as if they are mutually exclusive!), so I'm not going to open that can of worms. I'll just congratulate you and say I'm excited about the direction you are taking your project.

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm very happy to join Derailed and bring a bit of my skills to this wicked team of gnomes.
I've find many talents in them, and a strong will to make cool games.

After understanding and reading Derailed story, wishes and plan, I think I'm in total accordance with them, and it's just a logic step for me to get into this cool team :)
