Browser Usage At GarageGames

Factoid of the day: Browser Usage At GarageGames.com
Internet Explorer 6.x 48%
Internet Explorer 5.x 3%
Firefox 32%
Safari 9%
Opera 3%
Mozilla 2%
Others less than <1%
    (Netscape, Konqueror, Camino Galeon)

I don't want to start a holy war here these are just the stats straight from our site.

...but wow Firefox usage is much higher than I expected. I know Firefox has been gaining momentum over the last year but our visitors seem to be part of the hip early adopter crowd. Personally, I am a "use anything but IE Evangelist" but I have always, and will continue to, support the big four (IE, Firefox, Safari and Opera).

Rumors of IE7 features are promising, at least it sounds like the major CSS bugs will be fixed. Now if they address the security problems and get everyone to upgrade I could be convinced to become more neutral -- but my heart will always favor OpenSource.

Your thoughts?

Firefox all the way...

Mind you, I typed this into an IE browser.

EDIT: I'm very surprised so many people are using IE to be honest.

I'll probably never use IE again. Since I started using FireFox, I've noticed a 99% decrease in the amount of spyware/adware I get.

Firefox for me too. Less spyware, virtually instant updates for holes or bugs, small footprint, fast rendering. Why go back to IE at all?

Firefox all the way, though I still have Mozilla at home, and am still forced to use IE6 from time to time.

Plus firefox has rad extensions. I would be so lost without my U.S. Homeland Security Threat Level plugin for Firefox. LOL

Firefox's main strength for me (especially when searching GG forums :) ) is the tabbed browsing. Can't imagine doing research or browsing this site without this functionality.

i'll wait for firefox to have been around years before i proclaim it as some sort of solution to spyware. there's more to programs than v1.x.

i notice ie has a faster render time for me, so i prefer ie when i can.

also, no software is perfect :

A lot of people in "our" demographic have switched. Younger, tech savvy people are quite likely to drop IE these days. TBH, it's about time another browser got up to speed, because IE is seriously showing it's age. Once the browser wars cooled, Microsoft really let IE go. Hopefully the next release will bring it up to modern standards. We actually have a lot more problems with supporting IE than we do Firefox at my job.

Though I still have to support Netscape 4, so ... yeaouch.

I'm actually not too surprized by these stats. Boingboing.net actually has more firefox users then IE now. It's just a matter of time before more and more sites hit the 50/50 mark. Maybe that will breath some life back into IE (It looks as though it might have).

Ivan:

I'm not saying the software is perfect, but those bugs were patched in a matter of days. In the most recent example, the bug was stopped almost immediatly because they changed something on the mozilla servers to make the attack ineffective (No need to download a patch).

Regarding the browser usage stats: people might have used the masquerade setting on their browsers (eg. Identify as xxx.) I have to do this w/ Opera to use some of my work's internal web pages (which only display w/ IE, total BS but that's another story...)

Btw: The new site doesn't look as good in IE. The mouse-overs on the left nav box are all messed up and the page width goes to the far right no matter how big you make the window. It definitely looks better in FireFox.

Firefox all the way - being a professional web designer myself I am a strong proponent of following the standards set forth by W3C and I am appalled at Microsoft's "We'll render it our way, and the rest of you will conform to us."

Seems like they have finally learned after 3 versions of "rendering it their way" that people still want to conform to standards and W3C is here to stay. Seems like IE7 is a bit more standards oriented - let's just hope the thousands of known security issues, that they list publicly on their website and tell you flat out, "No, we're not fixing these - wait until IE7." will actually be fixed.

A friend of mine was telling me about another browser (albeit I can't remember the name, starts with an A I think) that is built on top of IE and addresses many security and standards issues, as well as providing a lot of Firefox's features from extensions via the stock install. I may check it out one day - if Firefox just explodes or something... I doubt it.

@Ivan
Firefox intentionally slows down render times. It tries to receive a large portion of the page before rendering, which is good for dialup users. Read through a few Firefox tweaking tutorials (there are even programs out to do it for you w/ the click of a button), and you can get Firefox running blazingly fast.

about:config - that's all you need :D

Firefox is the way to go. Someone like my Father remarks how slow it is to come up but I have to remind him that it isn't built into the OS. It's just amazing how well it works for a project that is total open source. It also gives credence to the open source's claim of "we can fix it faster" (which Microsoft tries to counter as BS)

I'm happy with Firefox. Only time I use IE is at work where our clients owner (Ford Motor Company) make it a requirement. Otherwise, I'm Firefox and Thunderbird and OOO all the way!

I'm trying out FireFox right now. It seems okay, if not an immediately noticeable improvement. We'll see :)

Use IE, surf the net a bit, then scan your system for spyware, I guarantee that you'll have AT LEAST 10 items found. I seriously noticed an overall increase in my system performance after I cleaned out all the spyware/adware/hijacker crap and started using FireFox.

@Michael "Evic" Wales
It's called Avant, it suffers from the same problems as IE does, or well it did when I tried it, however that was months ago. http://www.avantbrowser.com/

Firefox above all. What can I say, I'm a web designer?

I'll no doubt download IE7, but without proper CSS support I'll not use it for anything but brief tests.
