Plan for Britton LaRoche

by Britton LaRoche · 02/16/2004 (2:18 am) · 16 comments

Development continues on Burger Wars through Beaver Patrol. We have several new features coming soon to Game Beavers

Beaver Patrol now has the following:

1. Guided missles (with shoulder mounted missle launcher and target reticles)
2. Jets ( 5 new ones )
3. Jet Packs
4. Server side character persistence (flat file at the moment) but still fun. Weapon slots become automatically enabled as you get more points. This persists on the server for your next log in.
5. Enhanced AI. The bots are now a little smarter, they grab flags now if they are laying near by and they dont try to shoot through walls. The can distinguish team members from non team members and have better methods of selecting their target opponents.
6. Configurable power ups like regeneration, speed and enhanced jumping.
7. Character selection with team skins. Team names show up in red and blue.
8. Lots of new characters... slowly working their way in.
9. ODE physics integration

You can check out the work in progress... pre release by using cvs

*** Its not Ready YET ***

Its all free and the source and art files are freely available to everyone. You just need to join and contribute to the asset base to sell and distribute the game content. No restrictions on code except credit to the authors. Should be available fairly soon. We are doing some more testing and bug fixing. The code base should be hosted here on Garage Games cvs repository once we get it tested and stable.

The dev plan for Burger Wars was to have the team develop and release the code base to Game Beavers so everyone could benefit. Game Beavers is cool because we all own it and can use it in our own games. The idea is to get the small independent shops working together.

Now we Begin the Marketing Phase. The plan of attack is straight forward. After cold calling publishers listed on Gamma Sutra We now know that this is a good way to annoy secretaries and executive admins. You can actually feel the hate radiate through the phone after the 3rd or fourth call. Also a good lesson is that no one with "Director" or "VP" in their title actually checks their own voice mail. The same admin you spoke with earlier does that for them and transcribes it to a log. You are filtered out.

So the way to go is the same old way. Attend conferences, get business cards and hit the gaming sites with lots of good screenshots and media. We are now working with Fraps and our new levels to get some good coverage. In my opinion I think getting published is alot like getting a date or landing a wife. The trick is to get them to come to you. Get your act together, get polished, get confident and make yourself known. If networking with contacts and internet publishing does not work the next step is to contact agents. Much like a dating service they can hook you up for a fee.

We have some great contacts and a great list of websites from Cannon's Mini one racer. We will be posting this information and progress reports on Game Beavers.

We are adding in the hot coffe grenades and pickle gun. The Burger Bomb works well.

Hey cool Britton, sounds like you are adding a lot of resources to Game Beavers. It has been a while since I checked out the site, I'll have to come back for another look. Beaver Patrol sounds like it has plenty of new features added, I'll have to download it and give it a try while I am there. ;)

Looking great Britton! - I myself am a bit stuck for time at the moment coding on GreenLight but as soon as I find myself with some free time I'll see what I can do to help :)

btw. I'm still happy to help you out with coverage on my gaming site - GameBurst and I also have a lot of contacts at gaming & press websites too. Get in touch if you are interested.

That's right. I can't eat a burger or even some french fries without having to think of this game! Helps with any diet!

We have a bunch of really great guys over at Game Beavers. From the website it looks like things have slowed down. We are not updating the website because we have our heads down coding.

Dylans Sale and Pascal Rettig integrated ODE with Torque. Its just a start but its a good start. We have real physics.

Paul Dana compiled a Mac version for us.

Stefan Rampp is fantastic. Great level designer and coder! Everything from interiors to setting up the level and taking on new tasks. Stefan is the man! He whipped a quick version of the character persistence together. We decided its a must have, publishers drool when you mention persistent world. Stefan is also putting together a diablo style inventory manager allowing you to trade items with other players.

Sebastiao Almedia has compiled in many resources and added tons of new features. He added in the space vehicle physics for a much more fun jet ride.

Todd Zircher gave us 4 new Jet Models and Ed Gardner of Max gaming gave us one too.

Bottom line is we are all working together and cranking out some good stuff. When you join Game Beavers you get these guys working on your team too. Its been quiet over there but its like the calm before the storm. Some fantastic stuff is on its way things we havent even mentioned....

@Phil, yeah its disturbing. Its something everyone can relate to in just about every country in the world. These fast food restaraunts are every where. Something about a clown and food just seems odd, kind of strange, a bit funny. Throw in food weapons and you have clowns in a big food fight.

@Greg. You bet! I am interested and I will get in touch soon!

I wrote a 50 page design document for a game, Food Fight, last year. I had soda cans for grenades. Shaken not stirred! Mustard Gun snapped mustard packets for bullets. Bwahahahahahha. Be glad to forward that along if you want some ideas. :-)

Hmmm, Britton, did you just post a link to a CVS server that's reachable by anyone with TGE C++ code on it, or is it just a binary release that's stored in CVS ?
ie your plan is public, anyone can look at it, TGE licensee or not
Apart from that, Keep on torkin' !! Xp

@Nicolas: that module is just a binary release, so no problem there.

My doctor told me fast food was going to kill me anyway so why not join the burger wars?

A lot of us are going to be watching, learning and cheering as you succeed in this venture.

Good luck with those publishers! The game looks great, they shouldn't give you too much trouble ;)

@Nicolas, we are making the scripts freely available but the source code requires proof of a TGE SDK.

@Trent, thanks! You are a part of this too!

@Jeremy, Thanks! I can use all the luck I can get. I hope they dont give me too much trouble.
