Plan for Phil Carlisle

by Phil Carlisle · 07/13/2003 (2:44 am) · 12 comments

Well, I finally gave notice to Team17. Once we finish Worms 3D I'll be taking up a new Senior Lecturer post at the Bolton Institute (local university) teaching game development.

There are so many upsides to this move its unbelievable. I'll miss all my mates at Team17 though, but having said that, I only live round the corner, so if i get homesick I can pop round.

This new job will give me FAR more time to develop my own projects, Ive negotiated what seems like the perfect deal for me AND the institute, which allows me to spend some time on my projects AND keep myself current.

This also means that I OWN all parts of what I develop, which is one of the sticking points of working at a mainstream developer.

So what next?

I'll be announcing in due course my first game project, along with some torque related stuff that should prove useful to new developers :)

So I'm really looking forward now, things are on the up!

Phil.

Bolton Institute is just round the corner from me, wonder if anyone would notice a non student sneaking into lectures :)

That sounds like an awesome improvement! So we have to call you the ex-Worms guy now? ;)

I'm actually impressed that an education institute cares enough "Gaming" courses to track down a real expert, not just some washed out COBOL programmer than thinks he might know how to program games.

Yeah the ownership sucks. I have some things I have been working on (not all game related) that I will probably have to put aside as I have the usual IP contract to sign.

Anyway sounds like a great job - good luck!

Thanks guys.. I'm sure its going to be interesting.

Gareth: Yeah, I think they realize the importance of actually having someone from outside academia, theyre certainly expanding and are heading in the right direction.

I'm kinda hoping that in general the UK will finally recognise its obligation to train the future crop of game developers which contribute very much to the economy of the country.

I fully expect that BI will become THE place to study at for game development within the next 5 years. Thats my goal at least.

Nice, Phil! I've always wanted to teach, even if it was just voulenteer at a highschool that needed help in their CS department.

PS: Fans eagerly await Worms3D ;)

Congrats Phil, but a little sad to see you leave T17.

I remember reading about them forming back in the days of Amiga Format and played...god, got it at home still on the 2000...Alien Terror (know that's wrong but mental blank time).

Anyway, good to see that someone with experience might actually be teaching and putting some things in perspective, changing the current direction CS studies seem to be heading....or maybe you just looked at the hours and figured you didn't need crunch time any more :)

Best of luck with it though and hopefully it gives you everything you expect.
